One country, two systems?
Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It maintains a separate governing and economic system from that of mainland China under the principle of “one country, two systems.” This arrangement, established when sovereignty over Hong Kong was transferred from the United Kingdom to the PRC in 1997, allows Hong Kong to enjoy a high degree of autonomy, including its legal system, border controls, and democratic freedoms not found in mainland China.
