My good friend and fellow street photographer Tom Kaszuba just informed me that Fujifilm has their FinePix x100 Sample Photos live on their site. I have taken the liberty of showing you some photo samples which show how awesome a camera it can be for street photography with its pancake 35mm f/2 lens. Keep reading to see more pictures of the camera, as well as the hot and new sample photos!

If you haven’t been keeping up with the news of the Fujifilm FinePix x100, it is essentially the holy grail of camera for street photography (other than getting a $6900 Leica M9). When it comes out, it is estimated to cost around $1000 (not super cheap, but much more affordable than the Leica). With a hybrid viewfinder which is optical and digital, manual dials on top, and an old-school look– FujiFilm has a winner. This might be the camera that replaces my Canon 5D.

You can also check out the rest of the photos here.
Although I know that it definitely isn’t the camera who makes the street photographer, this definitely looks like an ideal bang-for-the-buck digital camera for street photography.
So what is your take on the camera? Do you think it is going to be a game-changer or a dud? Leave your comments below!

I will probably get one (if I can afford it), it really seems to be what I’m looking for. I wrote a couple of lines about it on my blog a while back.

wow, this looks awesome. did you see the video? http://d2b8yfhnsfhl3f.cloudfront.net/x100/x100_en.flv — it’s amazing how much it looks like an M9. clearly Fuji is trying to capture that huge swell of enthusiasts who love these type of cameras but can’t afford a Leica. very cool.
>>> So what is your take on the camera?
Hmmm… The devil will be in the details and I’d need to see more of those. For SP and street portraiture, I really have no complaints with what I’m using now (5D2 + 35/1.4)
I guess I’m used to it – my right arm is a little bigger as a result from always shooting one-handed. :)
But I’m in the camp that for SP, camera size, trying to be stealthy, etc doesn’t matter. I actually prefer a larger camera. As one of my SP friends once said, “It lets people know I’m on Duty.” :)
The price will kill me, but I would love to get one! Most likely will end up buying a buddies DMC-L1 or Leica D-Lux3. Because I am pretty sure that there is no amount of groveling possible to convince my wife to let me drop $1000 on a camera any time soon. :)
I’ve been waiting on a compact camera with a proper viewfinder for a long time. I haven’t done any street photography for ages, but I’ve had a real urge to do some for a while now. When I saw the X100 I knew I would buy it as soon as it was available. I pre-ordered one today and I’m planning to do an in depth review on my blog within a day of it being delivered. I wrote a preview blog on the X100 last week at http://www.derekclarkphotography.com/index.php/blog/regular-blog/ .
I think that other manufacturers must have taken note of the amount of interest this camera has received and I’m sure they will all have cameras like this in the pipeline. If the X100 doesn’t work out, I’ll be looking seriously at a Leica M8 or M9.
I’m glad to have found this blog due to the X100 too.
I’v been following this camera for months now and have just about cash saved up for when it is released in March. I’m excited about everything so far except the sample photos. I want to see some photos of people moving at like a 3ft focal distance. I want to see the clarity of focus with a nice bokeh effect on a “street” method type shot. I also am not happy that the RAW files will not be compatible with Adobe for a while (at least that is my understanding, correct me if I’m wrong). Other than that, I’m 99% sure I’ll be purchasing this.
I like the concept though I would still like to see high ISO shots as I am just as likely to be out at night as I am in the day. I like the GF1 ability to change lenses which would be one reason for me not to look at this camera.
First of all I love your blog, thank you for sharing with us budding photographers & hobbyists. This camera is a dream. Even my 450D can be bulky at times, my Yashicamat is a brick, the next smallest I have is a Brownie Hawkeye or Holga or Falcon.. I tinker. But.. nothing small enough and ‘instant’ enough like this Fuji. Plus it’s gorgeous. If I can swing it I want to get one. If I can’t I might sell a few of the oldies to get the new. If you get one make sure to share your photos!
That would actually be a gorgeous backup camera for the M9. Love the concept, love the look.
I am not that convinced of the sample pictures though, they’re all daylight midrange shots, I’d like to see some closeup or night shots. And it may be just me, but they look somewhat flat and very digital. Yet I will wait for a more thorough review.
andreaffm, I agree, “flat and very digital”
of course it’s a great camera… but meanwhile fujifilm seems to be a bit pushy in trying to build the x100 reputation towards some kind of luxury. as you can see, in china, the fuji guys reiterated in releasing brief that the price would be something around 10000RMB(about USD1500) and such price may not change in compromise even one year later! what a pitty for chinese photographers …
the jury is still out for me. Just read a post saying the viewfinder is blurry and hard to see through…..I dunno

I’ve heard they have a few bugs to work out with the x100, and that the manual focus is not so great and the auto is slow, very tempting but I’ll wait a little while to see if they can work out the bugs.
do you know anything about the X300?
