When Should We Upgrade?

Dear friend,

A practical thought:

Let’s upgrade our stuff, only when the gains of the upgrade are 10x better (something totally brand new, revolutionary, etc).

For example, most “upgrades” we make are a waste of money. We upgrade our cars, homes, phones, cameras, devices for only tiny marginal gains– most upgrades are only 5-10% “better”. In the words of Peter Thiel, really great technology is when it is 10x better; either ten times better than what already exists, or a totally brand new category.

In simple words:

  1. You probably don’t need to upgrade your phone.
  2. The newer version of that camera you won’t probably isn’t 10x better than the camera you already own.
  3. Probably best to spend our money on travels, experiences, education, and books (not gear).

Make new things!

For yourself, as an entrepreneur– strive to make new things that don’t yet exist; things you desire to see but don’t (yet) exist!

If you’re gonna work on something that has already been done before, strive to do it 10x better than anyone else.

Shoot for (beyond) the stars!
