Eric’s Note: I am happy to feature the work of Stéphane Daniel, a street photographer based in Montreal. Check out his background in street photography and his images below!

Stéphane: During my childhood in France I first learned photography from my father, who showed me how to make a right exposure on his Ricoh. To be quite honest, I remember it as somewhat boring. I also remember for Christmas one year, I received a an ugly red full automatic camera. As a student I used to record “souvenirs” on disposable cameras.

The day I finally had a decent salary, I bought an EOS300 and start to travel with it. Until that moment my life changed. I discovered on photo-magazines the way to shoot with a 24mm, I visited photo exhibitions in Paris and fell in love with Depardon, Salgado, Cartier-Bresson and Nachtwey’s black and white pictures.

One day I visited a Leica store owner and after playing with a Leica M6, I was hooked.

I live now in Montreal, the best place for photography in all Canada and I quit my job to be a student in photography

Which of Stéphane’s photographs speak to you? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Wysoki Niski

Shoot with tvs and human bunny is awsome!

  • Kiyatkin

    Bunny shot is awesome!

  • http://the-invisible-cities.com/ Jerome

While they are not bad, they’re not exactly spectacular either, I suppose there are tons of people who’d love to get featured here too so how exactly does the selection process work ?

“the best place for photography in all Canada”
Yes and no. While the urban background is diverse enough to offer near endless shooting possibilities, people are generally not very receptive to being shot in public and there are many quirky laws about this. (I live there too btw)

In any case if Stephane is reading this and would like to go out shooting sometime, leave me a message :)

  • Patrick

    I really like the first 5 !

Without doubt the Bunny/TV shot is excellent, I tend to agree with Jerome, the remainder are good without being spectacular. I envy you in terms of the streets at your disposal, enjoyable post.

    • Dacoit

I have a picture of that same bunny from my last trip to Montreal. Different setting, but clearly the same costume.

      • http://www.aperturepriority.co.nz/ Jason Howe

The shot looses a bit of its appeal if the bunny is walking around town every day….is that what your intimating??

I agree Jason, the bunny one stands out for me

  • Marlon Iraheta

The women in the blue skirt!!! Now that’s how I know Its from My hometown. It totally represent My city and one of the most beautiful places to visit during summer.

Montreal is touchy for street photography. Legally, you can’t publish photographs that allow you to recognise a person without their prior permission. It’s part of the Human Rights Code that applies to the whole province of Québec.

    • http://the-invisible-cities.com/ Jerome

Correct, wasn’t there a ruling or an exception about Fine art photography ? I think as long as it’s not commercial, you can still “get away with it”

      • http://paulmorel.com/ Paul

I think you might be right, then again the definition of what is Fine art photography could be disputed. For editorial, personal or commercial, I’ve always heard that the only exception are public figures like politicians, performers, etc.

You can still get away with it if nobody tries to sue you. Hahaha.

If you speak french, watch this very interesting video on ”L’affaire Duclos”.
Daniel Duclos is a street photographer who got in trouble for a photo of a
    young woman from Montreal.

Thank you for all your comments and critics, it helps a lot. I easily can be agree with people that think that my images are not spectacular. I try, as everybody, to improve myself day after day. I am my worst critic !
For people living in Montreal, I propose to meet altogether somewhere to discuss about Street Photography in general. And in particular I really want to break this bad and, in my opinion, wrong reputation of Montreal.
Do not hesitate to contact me and send your work link (to know you a bit more) and availabilities. (danchriste@yahoo.fr).
