Why? I remember how amazed and positively overwhelmed I was having the camera \u00e2\u20ac\u201d just imagine the initial enthusiasm we all had when we first switched from having the disposable film cameras (which took you days of waiting before you saw your photos). When I got my first digital camera with an LCD screen where you could instantly see and review your photos, I was so amazed!<\/p>\n<p>Now, we take digital technology and photography for granted. I still remember the days of dial up Internet (my 28.8k modem on AOL 3.0), and how it was such a privilege to access and use the internet. I still fondly remember the days my mom would yell at me for \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hogging up the phone line\u00e2\u20ac\u009d so much, in order for me to play Starcraft or download something really big online (I remember it took me literally two straight days to download 1\/30 RAR files for the original pirated version of Grand Theft Auto on my first PC, an Acer Aspire with Pentium I processor (with MMX technology, whatever that meant).<\/p>\n<p>Anyways nowadays with instant and ubiquitous WiFi and 4g Internet, we are spoiled. Whenever something on YouTube takes longer than 3 seconds to buffer, I get annoyed. Or when Google maps takes longer than 2 seconds to identify my position on my personal GPS coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Digital photography is the same: we are spoiled with cheap full-frame cameras, with a <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2015\/10\/14\/more-megapixels-more-problems\/\">bajillion megapixels<\/a>, and enough bells and whistles to confuse and distract us for the rest of our lives.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, there are no longer any bad digital cameras. They are all good. This includes all iPhones, and most Android devices as well.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve pretty much shot with all the high-end, expensive, and fancy cameras out there, and to be honest, <strong>all cameras are more similar than dissimilar.<\/strong> At this point, the only \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/14\/photography-entrepreneurship-101-meaningful-differentiation\/\">meaningful differentiation<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d that cameras and certain camera systems have are aesthetics (how the camera looks), ergonomics (how big the camera is, and how it fits in your hands), and the user interface (simplicity of menus, buttons, and logic of the layout of shutter, exposure dials, ISO, focusing, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>This means, no matter what camera you own, no matter how many times you upgrade the camera\u00e2\u20ac\u201d the experience will be more similar than dissimilar.<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself the question, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What is a camera, and what does a camera do?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Fundamentally, a digital camera is a metal box with a lens and a sensor, and you click a button, and it captures light and records a photograph onto a memory card.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Hedonic adaptation\/treadmill<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Hedonism: pleasure<\/li>\n<li>Adaptation: getting used to something<\/li>\n<li>Treadmill: you keep running faster, just to keep up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u02dcHedonic adaptation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is an important psychological and philosophical principle: no matter how good (or bad) something is, sooner or later, we will get \u00e2\u20ac\u0153used to it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or adapt\/become accustomed to it.<\/p>\n<p>For example, let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s say I buy a new $7,000 digital Leica. The first month is awesome, but after that first month, I get \u00e2\u20ac\u0153used to it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and no longer feel the initial thrill\/pleasure I did when I first bought it.<\/p>\n<p>Or when I first upgraded my iPad Air to an <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2017\/11\/04\/ipad-pro-10-5-review-for-photographers\/\">iPad Pro<\/a>. I can first note the differences (brighter screen, faster with less lag), but I soon \u00e2\u20ac\u0153get used to it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and no longer appreciate the upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>The same goes with phones, laptops, cars, homes, lifestyle, food, clothes, and almost everything in life.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hedonic treadmill\u00e2\u20ac\u009d means that in order to keep \u00e2\u20ac\u0153feeling good\/pleasure\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is to keep on upgrading whatever you have\/own. That means you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re on a never-ending treadmill, that keeps going faster and faster. You just always have the newest newest iPhone, car, camera, and whatever trendy something in order to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153keep up with the Joneses\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Practical takeaways<\/h2>\n<p>What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the consequence of all this?<\/p>\n<p>My thoughts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Because you will adapt no matter how good or bad your camera is, it almost makes sense to opt for the cheaper camera, pre-anticipating your \u00e2\u20ac\u0153hedonic adaptation\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/strong> By spending less money on the camera, you will have more cash to do more fun\/meaningful things with your money, like experiences (traveling, meeting friends for dinner\/food\/coffee, attending educational photography classes\/conferences\/workshops) or buying photography <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/books\/\">books<\/a> that will inspire and motivate you to make more and better photos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you do eventually upgrade your digital camera or device, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re realistic that the upgrade won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be that dramatic<\/strong>. That means, buying a new camera or upgrading won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t suddenly re-inspire or transform your photography for the better.<\/li>\n<li>Not making your camera the excuse of your lack of motivation to take photos.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>It isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t your fault that you feel dissatisfied with your camera gear<\/h2>\n<p>To be honest, if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve ever felt \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gear acquisition syndrome\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (GAS) it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not your fault. Blame it on <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/16\/why-you-should-delete-your-instagram\/\">instagram<\/a> (people making you feel envious because of their #cameraporn), blame it on the camera companies\/blogs\/industry (who want to brainwash you to <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/20\/why-camera-companies-want-you-to-be-perpetually-dissatisfied-with-your-camera-gear\/\">perpetually be dissatisfied with your camera equipment<\/a>, in order for you to keep buying new gear), and blame modern-day capitalist\/consumerist society. If we as consumers stopped buying new stuff and cameras, the whole photography and capitalist economy would fall apart.<\/p>\n<p>Know that it is hard to eradicate the urge or desire to buy new shit you probably don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need. The only way I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been able to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153reformat my mental hard drive\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is by fasting from the Internet (I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t used\/read Reddit since 2010, not reading modern-day news, deleting my Instagram, installing adblockers on all my browsers for all my devices, no longer checking my Facebook, getting rid of my phone, and no longer checking my email). I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve become a digital monk\/recluse of some sorts, in order to refresh my brain, which I felt was being hijacked by modern technology, social media (what Jaron Lanier calls \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbehavior altering empires\u00e2\u20ac\u2122), and modern advertising\/marketing.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the upshot of all of this is that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m now more productive (productive as producing more blog posts, articles, books, videos, photos, etc\u00e2\u20ac\u201d not productive as answering emails), I shoot more photos, I walk around more (and thus have an improved mood), I feel less unnecessary stress and anxiety on a daily basis, I eat and sleep better, have deeper and less interrupted conversations with friends\/family\/Cindy, and overall am a lot happier and more fulfilled in life.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>True happiness in photography is to shoot more!<\/h2>\n<p>For example, recently my <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/ricoh\/\">RICOH GR II<\/a> broke (the aperture blades are now stuck when I turn on the camera), so I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m just using the <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2018\/04\/11\/lumix-lx100-review-for-street-photography\/\">Lumix LX100<\/a> that my friend Dav gave to Cindy. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153best\u00e2\u20ac\u009d camera out there, but good enough for me \u00e2\u20ac\u201d small, compact, light, wide-angle 24mm lens, quick to autofocus and shoot, close macro functions, and fun to shoot. The high iso or image quality isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the best, but good enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now that I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care to have the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153best\u00e2\u20ac\u009d camera, I make fewer excuses for myself, and therefore end up shooting more photos. My favorite camera for street photography is the <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/ricoh\/\">Ricoh GR II<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00ZY9JJEU\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00ZY9JJEU&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=erikimstrpho-20&amp;linkId=IJG4XAQJ7SCDFNUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Click to read more\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/ricoh-grd-v-angle3-660x377.jpg?resize=528%2C302\" alt=\"1x1.trans Street Photography Camera Game Changer: The Ricoh GRD V \" width=\"528\" height=\"302\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/ricoh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ricoh GR II<\/strong><\/a> is the best bang-for-the-buck camera for street photography on the market. It has an APS-C sensor (DSLR-sized sensor), a super-sharp 28mm lens (no anti-aliasing filter), and literally fits into your front pocket.<\/p>\n<p>The Ricoh GR II is pretty much the same as the prior Ricoh GR, except it has Wi-Fi built in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do I recommend the Ricoh GR II?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First of all, for street photography you want the smallest, most compact, and inconspicuous camera (that you can always carry with you). I find that with other digital cameras, you end up never carrying them with you 24\/7, simply because they are too big. The <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/01\/eric-kim-fujifilm-x100f-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fujifilm X100F<\/a> and digital Leica&#8217;s are fantastic tools, but honestly even those cameras are too big to fit in your front pocket.<\/p>\n<p>In street photography, the size of the sensor is also not very important. In-fact, having a non-full frame camera is generally preferable, because you have more depth-of-field in street photography, which is beneficial to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/05\/an-introduction-to-zone-focusing-or-hyperfocal-focusing-for-your-leica-rangefinder-or-dslr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">zone-focusing<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When I shoot with the <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/ricoh\/\">Ricoh GR II<\/a>, I generally keep the camera on &#8220;P&#8221; mode, ISO 1600, and center-point autofocus. I treat it like a point-and-shoot: I simply point and click. This makes me have to think less when shooting, and spend more energy focusing on the composition, framing, and capturing emotion in the photos.<\/p>\n<p>Many photographers bemoan the fact that the Ricoh GR II doesn&#8217;t have a viewfinder. Honestly, I feel that viewfinders are a bit overrated &#8212; the LCD screen helps you be more creative with your compositions (shooting super-low angle, or a super-high angle), and also helps you photograph your subjects closer (putting a small compact camera close to someone&#8217;s face is less intimidating than putting a big DSLR lens into someone&#8217;s face).<\/p>\n<p>Also if you want, the <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/ricoh\/\">Ricoh GR II<\/a> has a fantastic &#8220;<em>snap mode<\/em>&#8221; which allows you to pre-focus to a certain distance (1 meter, 1.5 meters, 5 meters, infinity), which is like zone-focusing on a rangefinder camera. This means when you&#8217;re shooting on the streets on a sunny day, you can set your pre-focus to 1.5 meters, ISO 1600, aperture-priority mode in f\/8, and take photos that are all sharp and in-focus.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the Ricoh GR II has the simplest yet comprehensive menu out of any digital camera I&#8217;ve used. Use that money to travel to a country you&#8217;ve always wanted to travel, to <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/16\/75-inspirational-street-photography-books-you-gotta-own\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">buy photography books<\/a>, and to invest in photography-education (workshops, classes, seminars).<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, you can charge the camera via USB, which means you don&#8217;t need to travel with a bulky battery-charger.
