Dear friend,<\/p>\n

A word of encouragement: shoot photography however you would like \u00e2\u20ac\u201d everything is permitted in photography; there are no rules!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is always an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153exception\u00e2\u20ac\u009d to every rule<\/h2>\n

This is my rationale: after studying all the masters of photography<\/a>, for every \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rule\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in photography there is almost always a counter-rule.<\/p>\n

For example, Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/a> said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t crop<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153only shoot black and white<\/a> and 50mm\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. But then you had some of his own pupils who went against him \u00e2\u20ac\u201d William Eggleston<\/a> and Martin Parr<\/a> shot color<\/a> with great success, Rene Burri<\/a> shot with a telephoto lens, and Robert Frank<\/a> did aggressive crops in his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Americans\u00e2\u20ac\u009d project.<\/p>\n

Also when studying philosophy<\/a>, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve realized that all the moral\/ethical \u00e2\u20ac\u0153truths\u00e2\u20ac\u009d we are taught are nothing but opinions. For example, the Bible says that \u00e2\u20ac\u0153money is the root of all evil\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, whereas philosophers like Publilius Syrus<\/a> will say that, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Money, when used wisely, is a blessing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Also Zen<\/a> Buddhists say that having no desires is good, whereas my buddy Nietzsche tells me that indulging our desires is a good thing.<\/p>\n

\n

Follow your own vision<\/h2>\n

Essentially, the moral of the story is this:<\/p>\n

\n Discover your own truths in life, and figure out what works best for you, what resonates with you, and what feels right to you. Ignore everyone else, and follow your own vision and voice \u00e2\u20ac\u201d like a brave eagle which flies high, and only focuses on their lofty flights.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

Go against the grain<\/h2>\n

All great artists and innovators have always gone \u00e2\u20ac\u0153opposite\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153against the grain\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from the majority. For example, Picasso<\/a> pissed off everyone with his cubist works, whereas the art world preferred \u00e2\u20ac\u0153realistic\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and romantic paintings.<\/p>\n

When Alfred Stieglitz<\/a> started to shoot with a handheld camera, all the snobby photographers of his age (using tripods and large format cameras) shunned him. When Kanye West<\/a> made his album \u00e2\u20ac\u0153808s and heartbreaks\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and started to sing-auto tune with his raps, the entire hip hop world was up in arms.<\/p>\n

\n

Creative isolation<\/h2>\n

Practical tip: if you want to nurture your own unique and creative artistic vision, you must allow yourself periods of time of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153creative isolation<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from the crowds. All the crowds on Instagram and social media all follow the same cliches and trends. If you care more about developing a unique artistic vision (instead of getting a bunch of likes), spend periods of time (perhaps weeks, months, or even years) not using social media.<\/p>\n

\"My<\/p>\n

Rather, use your free time to experiment with new artworks, and also spend time studying the master artists<\/a> from the past. Studying the artistic works of those in the past are a lot more durable \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Nassim Taleb calls this the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Lindy Effect\u00e2\u20ac\u009d: things which have existed for a long time will probably continue to exist for a long time. However things which are trendy will probably die off (remember the hype behind Crocs, GoPro, and MySpace in the past?)<\/p>\n

Be your own judge<\/h2>\n

Another idea: don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t ask others for their approval. Rather, pause, look at your own work, and ask yourself:<\/p>\n

\n \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do I like my own artwork?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If you like it, it is good. No need for approval or affirmation from others.<\/p>\n

Cultivate your own taste<\/h2>\n

A lot of us are spoon fed stuff, and told, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153This tastes good. You should like it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

However, very rarely are we given the opportunity to develop our own tastes.<\/p>\n

As with food and artwork, you must develop your own palette, and your own taste. You must discover what tastes you like, and what tastes you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like.<\/p>\n

Most people if you ask them, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153What do you like?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d most people have no idea what they like. Unfortunately, most people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the courage, opportunity or chance to reflect and meditate on what they like. They might be too busy with work or life that they just follow the rest of the herd.<\/p>\n

The philosopher-economist Fernandinho Galiani once said:<\/p>\n

\n \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Philosophers are not made to love one another. Eagles do not fly in company. That is for partridges and starlings. Gliding above with claws, is the destiny of geniuses.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Friend, you are that eagle. Soar high with the strength and virtue of your own wings, and fly wherever your heart desires. Let the lambs on earth follow their own herd and their own shepherd. It is your destiny to forge your own path.<\/p>\n
