Automate the unimportant, to focus on what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really important to you.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n For example in photography, I just shoot in P (program) mode, ISO 800-1600, center point autofocus, so I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to think about my settings. For my technical settings I just,<\/p>\n \n Set it and forget it!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Using P mode in photography isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the 100% best, or 100% \u00e2\u20ac\u0153optimal\u00e2\u20ac\u009d strategy in photography. There are times that shooting fully manual will be better.<\/p>\n Yet, shooting in P mode is a good example of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153satisficing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d (satisfy and sufficing). Rather than being a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153maximizer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and trying to get the 100% ideal, perfect setup \u00e2\u20ac\u201d you make it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153good enough for 80% of situations\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d and focus on what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s important (in photography, making photos).<\/p>\n This strategy of living with simple rules of thumb is also known as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153herursitics\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (championed by philosophers like Nassim Taleb, and psychologists like Gerd Gigerenzer.<\/p>\n The purpose of photography:<\/p>\n \n Make photos that bring us joy.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Also,<\/p>\n \n The more I shoot, the happier I am.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Often, I fall victim to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153paralysis by analysis\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d I try to get everything so perfect, that I end up doing nothing.<\/p>\n For example in street photography<\/a>, if I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m always switching my equipment and technical settings, I become distracted, and shoot less. I feel more frustrated, and feel less flexible.<\/p>\n What I want:<\/p>\n \n To achieve a zen-like state of focus, and to let my artistry just flow.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n That means, in photography, to just forget yourself, forget your technical settings, become \u00e2\u20ac\u0153one\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with your camera, and to shoot uninhibited, with no delay, with no friction, and no resistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n I like to call this getting into a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153zen zone<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n I think this philosophy of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153set it and forget it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d works in many different ways in life.<\/p>\n For example, I wear the same all black outfit everyday. Why? I just set my wardrobe, and forget it \u00e2\u20ac\u201d therefore I can use my precious brain processing power on what is truly important to me \u00e2\u20ac\u201d making art, writing, reading, researching, and cooking up new ideas.<\/p>\n Another idea: I always have the same routine for making my coffee. I take an icy cold shower, and boil some water. I then grind my coffee beans, then make a pour over coffee with a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Clever\u00e2\u20ac\u009d dripper. I have the same zen monk-like routine for my morning coffee, and I use this as an opportunity to think, and meditate. I also don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t eat breakfast, so that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one less thing I need to worry about.<\/p>\n Setting it and forgetting it\u00e2\u20ac\u201d this also applies to equipment or tools we use.<\/p>\n For example, I always write on the IA writer app. This allows me to have a meaningful \u00e2\u20ac\u0153default\u00e2\u20ac\u009d option, so I can focus on what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really important \u00e2\u20ac\u201d writing. Rather than juggling a dozen writing apps.<\/p>\n With my camera, I just shoot with a RICOH GR II<\/a>, with the integrated 28mm lens<\/a>. I just set my equipment (camera) and forget it. There is a zen of one camera and one lens<\/a>, because I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not distracted about what camera to shoot with. I just shoot with the Ricoh, and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think about it.<\/p>\n To clarify, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not saying we should automate everything in our lives.
