Carbon fiber itself consists of thin strands of carbon atoms that are tightly bonded together in a crystal-like structure, making it incredibly strong and lightweight. However, on its own, carbon fiber is just the reinforcing material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To form usable parts, carbon fiber is embedded in a matrix, often made from a type of plastic (such as epoxy resin), which binds the fibers together and gives the composite its shape. This combination of carbon fibers with a plastic matrix is known as <strong>carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP)<\/strong>.
