Barbara Kruger, one of the most innovative contemporary artists and photographers who blends graphic design, typography, anti-consumerism, and social critique through her pictures.<\/p>\n

Why I love her work<\/h2>\n
    \n
  1. Pictures to make social commentary. Not pictures for picture sake. <\/li>\n
  2. Pictures that fight and push back against consumerism, the Art World, empowerment of women.<\/li>\n
  3. Innovations using a simple palette of black, white, and red. You can do a lot with a few colors. <\/li>\n
  4. Edgy, powerful messages that STICK. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Assignments for you<\/h2>\n
      \n
    1. Create a photo montage of text, your photos, and a political, social, or economic message you want to make. Do this on photoshop or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153in real life\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with glue and scissors. <\/li>\n
    2. Try to make a Barbara Kruger copy image. Have fun. Realize the steetwear brand SUPREME copied her style. <\/li>\n
    3. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just do traditional photos. Remix your own image, and make something new. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Inspirations from other master photographers<\/h2>\n

      Interesting that she was inspired by Alexander Rodchenko<\/a>, who also experimented with text, images, and visual collages. Lesson: Experiment violently with pictures. Focus more on a social impact through photos, not just \u00e2\u20ac\u0153pure photography.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Being anti-traditional in Photography.<\/p>\n

      Interesting that she was taught by DIANE ARBUS<\/a>, also one of the great female masters of photography<\/a>. I wonder what impact Arbus had on Kruger? My theory: edgy pictures, that are brutally honest. Not \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photoshopped reality\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p>\n

      Short, but Powerful<\/h2>\n

      We all have short attention spans, as Kruger once said. Some of her short, and powerful statements:<\/p>\n

      \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Your fictions become history”
      \n“Your body is a battleground”
      \n“I shop therefore I am”
      \nQuestions such as “Who prays loudest?” or “Who laughs last?” – the latter accompanying a skeleton standing up at a microphone
      \n\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on a human face forever.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (from George Orwell)<\/p>\n

      Lesson: Short and sweet is generally more memorable. Bold graphics, bold colors (red, black, white) catch your attention. Therefore, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make boring art. Great art has great marketing built into it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Inspiration from architecture, and the ordering of space<\/h2>\n

      \n Architecture is my first love, if you want to talk about what moves me.. the ordering of space, the visual pleasure, architecture’s power to construct our days and nights.”\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      I love the positioning of elements in Kruger\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pictures. I need to study the position of her text, her layout of lines, where she puts frames, and what kind of images she uses.<\/p>\n

      Also as a personal note, study this concept of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153ordering of space\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in architecture. Where does \u00e2\u20ac\u0153visual pleasure\u00e2\u20ac\u009d come from?<\/p>\n

      Social change<\/h2>\n

      Looking at her work, makes me challenge my own consumerist behavior.<\/p>\n

      Lesson: Visual images and pictures (like propaganda) can change the minds, hearts, and souls of the viewer… to challenge their cultural beliefs.<\/p>\n
