I made this recent list of things I have learned while shooting street photography&#8211; and some of my personal opinions. Remember, take everything in this list with a grain of salt! As you can see, many of my opinions have changed over the course of 2 years. Keep reading- I hope you enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A photograph is like a sentence. Aim to write a book.<\/li>\n<li>Always smile and say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153thank you\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when shooting on the streets<\/li>\n<li>Shoot with your heart, not with your eyes<\/li>\n<li>Shooting with friends will make you feel much more comfortable on the streets<\/li>\n<li>The most versatile focal length is 35mm<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t rely on autofocus \u00e2\u20ac\u201c use <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/an-introduction-to-zone-focusing-or-hyperfocal-focusing-for-your-leica-rangefinder-or-dslr\/\">zone focusing<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have a drink to loosen yourself up before shooting on the streets<\/li>\n<li>Have at least 3 backups of all your photographs (hard drives all eventually fail)<\/li>\n<li>If you shoot film, keep your images organized<\/li>\n<li>The best critique is never online\u00e2\u20ac\u201dalways in-person<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t ask people what they like about your photographs, ask them what they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t like<\/li>\n<li>Having one camera and lens is bliss<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2011\/12\/buy-books-not-gear\/\">Buy books, not gear<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Wandering\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/10_glazed.jpg?resize=660%2C440\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Style isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t something aesthetic<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Shoot who you are\u00e2\u20ac\u009d &#8211; Bruce Gilden<\/li>\n<li>Harness the power of groups\/collectives to spread your photography<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t focus on aesthetics in your photos\u00e2\u20ac\u201dbut rather the message<\/li>\n<li>Shooting film is magical<\/li>\n<li>Never upload your photographs immediately\u00e2\u20ac\u201dlet them marinate for at least a week before sharing them<\/li>\n<li>Good projects often take at least a year to complete<\/li>\n<li>Post-processing your images digitally should never take more than a minute<\/li>\n<li>Printing your photographs out large is immensely satisfying<\/li>\n<li>Share your knowledge &amp; technique with others \u00e2\u20ac\u201c never hoard it yourself<\/li>\n<li>It is better to shoot everyday for 10 minutes than to shoot once a week for 10 hours<\/li>\n<li>Only show your best work<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/10_faces.jpg?resize=660%2C440\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Photo-sets with over 25 images are exhausting to look through<\/li>\n<li>It is great to constantly experiment with your technique and gear\u00e2\u20ac\u201dbut once you find something that works reasonably well stop and stick with it<\/li>\n<li>When in doubt, ask for permission<\/li>\n<li>People love to be complimented while on the streets<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take photos of people who look pissed off or walk extremely quickly. These are the people who often get upset when you take their photograph<\/li>\n<li>If shooting digital, always shoot in RAW<\/li>\n<li>Look at other forms of art for inspiration<\/li>\n<li>Take photos of people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s faces, not their backs<\/li>\n<li>Eyes are the windows to the soul. Get photos with eye-contact in your images.<\/li>\n<li>Your photos are only as good as the photos you look at. Avoid the internet and look at photo-books for inspiration<\/li>\n<li>Giving helpful critique to others will make you a better judge of your own work<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153If your photos aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t good enough, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not close enough\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Robert Capa<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"3 men\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/3_three-mensquare.jpg?resize=660%2C600\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>After a whole day of shooting, I am lucky if I get 1-2 good photographs<\/li>\n<li>The more time you spend on online forums, the less you will shoot<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think too much while taking photographs. Avoid \u00e2\u20ac\u0153paralysis by analysis\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t chimp while shooting on the streets (checking your LCD screen). You will lose many decisive moments<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Luck is when preparation meets opportunity\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Seneca<\/li>\n<li>You can get luckier in street photography by spending more time out shooting in the streets<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t crop. Get it right in-camera<\/li>\n<li>Look for the light<\/li>\n<li>You will take the best photographs in the least-likely places<\/li>\n<li>Always carry your camera with you everywhere you go. Everywhere<\/li>\n<li>The smaller your camera is the less intimidating you will look<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t shoot from the hip if you have a camera with a viewfinder. Use the viewfinder\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s there<\/li>\n<li>Good composition alone doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make a good photograph. A great photograph needs soul.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/10_nails.jpg?resize=660%2C440\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let inspiration be your main source of motivation for shooting. Go out and shoot even when you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t feel like it\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand the streets will re-inspire you<\/li>\n<li>Street photography doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to have people in it<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Creepiness is proportional to focal length\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t shoot street photography with a telephoto\/zoom lens<\/li>\n<li>The best place to shoot street photography is your own backyard<\/li>\n<li>Crouch often when shooting to get at least eye-level (or lower) to get a natural (or unusual perspective)<\/li>\n<li>The lighter your camera bag, the more you will enjoy shooting<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t forget to look down and up when shooting<\/li>\n<li>When in doubt, click<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t try to just take photos of interesting people, but try to take photos of interesting gestures<\/li>\n<li>It is better to take an extraordinary photo of something ordinary, rather than taking an ordinary photo of something extraordinary<\/li>\n<li>The way people react to street photography (all around the world) is often more similar than dissimilar<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"elegance\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/3_elegance-seoul-2009.jpg?resize=660%2C440\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>There is no perfect camera for street photography. Every camera has its own strengths\/limitations<\/li>\n<li>Learn to memorize a focal length so you can frame your shots before even bringing up your camera to your eye<\/li>\n<li>The best combo: one camera and one lens<\/li>\n<li>Focus on hands \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they communicate strong messages to the viewer<\/li>\n<li>Contrary to popular belief, most people don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get pissed off when you take photos of them (most people actually quite like it)<\/li>\n<li>Street photographs are well-balanced with an odd-number of subjects (1 person, 3 people, 5 people, etc)<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Realize that most of your photographs are crap\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Charlie Kirk<\/li>\n<li>Shoot to please yourself, not others<\/li>\n<li>The best response to internet trolls who criticize your work (without helpful critique) is to ignore them completely<\/li>\n<li>If you have the opportunity, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just settle for one photograph. Take multiple photographs if possible. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Killers shoot twice\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Thomas Leuthard<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t ask for critiques, nobody will ever give it to you<\/li>\n<li>If you are going to ask someone for permission for a photograph, always preface your question with, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I know this may sound weird, but\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. Works like a charm.<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make time to go out and shoot, you will never go out and shoot.<\/li>\n<li>Learn to judge distances well- so you can prefocus before you anticipate the shot (1.2 meters is roughly two arms-lengths, and 3 meters is roughly half the distance of a room)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/10_california-girls.jpg?resize=660%2C440\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"440\" \/><br \/>\n76. Spend less time arguing over the definition of street photography, and go out and shoot more<br \/>\n77. You only remember 5-10 photographs from some of the most famous street photographers who have ever lived. Aim to take 5-10 great photographs before you die.<br \/>\n78. Photography is incredibly difficult<br \/>\n79. If people notice you taking a photograph of you, tell them, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ignore me\u00e2\u20ac\u201dpretend like you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t see me\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and most people will laugh it off and continue doing what they were doing<br \/>\n80. If confronted by a person on why you took their photograph, take a step toward them and be open and honest about your intentions. Stand your ground and know your rights.<br \/>\n81. Simplify your photographs. Less is more.<br \/>\n82. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t put watermarks on your photographs. It cheapens your work.<br \/>\n83. Street photographs don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sell<br \/>\n84. Travel as often as you can to open up your views to the rest of the world and society<br \/>\n85. Always carry an extra memory card and battery (in war two is one and one is none)<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"opposed\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/files\/gimgs\/3_all-the-worlds-a-stage-10-of-10.jpg?resize=660%2C490\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t always hunt for shots\u00e2\u20ac\u201dif you are patient enough, they will come to you<\/li>\n<li>Shoot at ISO 1600 or above (keep your shutter above 250ths\/second)<\/li>\n<li>f\/8 and be there<\/li>\n<li>Black cameras draw less attention to you<\/li>\n<li>It is more interesting to take photos of rich people than poor people<\/li>\n<li>Never delete any of your photographs (you can rediscover hidden gems later in the future)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B004Q2SDAW\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=erikimstrpho-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B004Q2SDAW\">Silver Efex Pro 2<\/a> is the best black and white conversion software for digital<\/li>\n<li>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You miss 100% of the shots you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Wayne Gretsky<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t aim to take pretty photographs, aim to take meaningful photographs<\/li>\n<li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be sneaky when shooting\u00e2\u20ac\u201dyou will get in twice as much trouble if you get caught<\/li>\n<li>A great street photograph both has strong composition and story<\/li>\n<li>When it comes down to it, composition isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t as important as the story<\/li>\n<li>99.9% of the photographs online are crap<\/li>\n<li>Love your critics<br \/>\n100.Offer to email your subjects their photographs (they love it)<br \/>\n101.Break the rules<br \/>\n102.Make your own list<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It now has been around 5 years that I have been shooting street photography- and I have learned an incredible amount through trial and failure.
