How Lisette Model innovated in photography<\/h2>\n

First of all, she was the teacher of DIANE ARBUS<\/a>, who also influenced a lot of photography.<\/p>\n

Lisette Model has also innovated the field of photography with her camera work: shooting dynamic, edgy, low angle, flash, up close shots. Her work has apparently influenced BRUCE GILDEN<\/a> a lot, apparent in his low angle, flash, 28mm<\/a> work.<\/p>\n

Also, I love Lisette Model\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work because (in her words) the photos \u00e2\u20ac\u0153**hit you in the stomach.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d To me, Lisette Model\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s photos are edgy, interesting, full of anxiety, tension. In other words, her photos are NOT boring (the only cardinal sin of a photographer).<\/p>\n

Who was she influenced by? Alexey Brodovitch and Beaumont Newhall.<\/p>\n

Shooting without judgement?<\/h2>\n

Lisette Model said that she observed her subjects, without judging them.<\/p>\n

I would say, her photos are obviously a reflection of her interest in individuals at the outskirts of society. If anything, I see criticism of the rich and fancy in her photos, but love and empathy in the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153freaks\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she photographed.<\/p>\n

Lesson: Photograph your \u00e2\u20ac\u0153superiors\u00e2\u20ac\u009d like your \u00e2\u20ac\u0153inferiors\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and shoot your \u00e2\u20ac\u0153inferiors\u00e2\u20ac\u009d like your \u00e2\u20ac\u0153superiors.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reveal the outer world and the inner-world<\/h2>\n

In this essay<\/a> on Diane Arbus, Lisette Model told her students to use photography and the camera as a tool to explore the outer world, and the inner-world and inner-emotions and soul of the photographer.<\/p>\n

Lesson: explore the world around you with your camera. But more importantly: use the camera as a tool to explore YOUR OWN SOUL.<\/p>\n

\n \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When I was painting in Paris, we drew from the models. And you cannot imagine how fantastically boring it can be to look hour after hour at a beautiful body. But an ugly body can be fascinating.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d – Lisette Model\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To me, I agree with Lisette Model. To photograph traditionally \u00e2\u20ac\u0153beautiful\u00e2\u20ac\u009d people (like fashion photos of the skinny) is a bit boring. They all look the same.<\/p>\n

Lisette Model tried to shoot fashion, but perhaps found it boring. Instead, she photographed \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Normal\u00e2\u20ac\u009d people out in the streets and public spaces.<\/p>\n

Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t judge yourself; just photograph.<\/h2>\n

There is a story of Lisette Model out with Diane Arbus in a field trip. Here is the excerpt<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Early in the course, on a field trip, Lisette saw that Diane, very pale, would lift the camera to her eye and then lower it. She was following Lisette\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s instructions to click the shutter only when she saw something that excited her. In the face of what she found, she faltered.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t photograph,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Why not?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lisette asked.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Because what I photograph is evil.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Evil or not,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lisette replied, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153if you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t photograph this you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll never photograph in your life.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Lisette believed that over the next few months she helped Diane conquer her inhibitions. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You had to reach her where the deepest anxiety lay\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthat it was evil,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And I pushed it out. One hundred percent consciously. It was my business as a teacher to get it out.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The moral of the story: don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t censor yourself when shooting. Only shoot what excites or interests you<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
