Thucydides wrote his history over 2,500 years ago. If his words have existed until\u00c2\u00a0today; there must be great wisdom within.<\/p>\n<p>Also admirable&#8211; he actually fought in the war. He had skin in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Nice quote from Nietzsche on Thucydides:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Plato is a coward in the face of reality \u00e2\u20ac\u201c consequently he takes refuge in the ideal: Thucydides is a master of himself \u00e2\u20ac\u201c consequently he is able to master life.&#8221; &#8211; Nietzsche<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like that idea&#8211; I want to become a master of myself.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Rather, to study philosophy\u00e2\u20ac\u201d via real-world examples<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  \u00e2\u20ac\u0153History is philosophy teaching by examples.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\n  \u00ef\u00bf\u00bc<br \/>\n  Takeaway: What examples can I learn from the past, and remember them\u00e2\u20ac\u201d to change my future behavior?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>2. Write for future generations<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  I have written my work not as an essay to win the applause of the moment; but as a possession for all time.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To write for the applause for the moment, and today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s generation is short-lived. Rather, seek to create works for future generations\u00e2\u20ac\u201d for humanity to possess your ideas \u00e2\u20ac\u0153for all time.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Keep up the hustle for future humanity.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Tyrannies are born from love of wealth<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  As the power of Hellas grew; and the acquisition of wealth become more an objective; the revenues of the state increasing; tyrannies were established almost everywhere.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As our power grows, we want to acquire more wealth. And as we increase our revenues, we establish more tyrannies.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t do injustice to those who are weaker to you<\/h2>\n<p>Abstain from doing injustice to those weaker than you. It will show your true power:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Abstinence from all injustice to other first-rate powers is a greater tower of strength than anything that can be gained by the sacrifice of permanent tranquility for an apparent temporary advantage.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Never sacrifice your \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpermanent tranquility\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in life, for a short-lived advantage.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Self-control<\/h2>\n<p>How do we learn to control ourselves?<\/p>\n<p>The first step is to be brave. Bravery leads to honor. Then honor leads to self-control:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Self control contains honor as a chief constituent; and honor \u00e2\u20ac\u201d bravery.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we want to control our actions in life, we must live an honorable life. To live a life full of virtue, not vice.<\/p>\n<p>And in order to be honorable in life, we need to disregard what others think \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and follow our own conscience. Having bravery and courage will help us pursue our honor.<\/p>\n<p>So to recap, the intended outcome is for us to learn more self-control and self-restraint. And the first step is bravery.<\/p>\n<p>Bravery -&gt; Self-control<\/p>\n<h2>6. The past will help us today<\/h2>\n<p>The point of studying history is to study the past, in order to help our present lives:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  There is no advantage in reflections on the past further than (what) may be of service to the present.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t study history or the past for the sake of it. Learn valuable lessons from the past in history, and learn how <em>not<\/em> to make the same mistakes today.<\/p>\n<p>For example, what I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All those who are power-hungry, will eventually die, and their memory fades from history.<\/li>\n<li>No matter how much money, power, or influence you have\u00e2\u20ac\u201d you can never be happy.<\/li>\n<li>Vice will stick with you forever; Virtue will live on forever.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So as a note: study history from the past, to better inform my today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s actions.<\/p>\n<p>What can I do in my power <em>today<\/em> to be a better person, and to do more virtuous work?<\/p>\n<h2>7. Double-down on our hustle<\/h2>\n<p>To hustle, work hard.<\/p>\n<p>If we want to keep being prosperous into the future\u00e2\u20ac\u201d we must maintain what the present has given us. We must also \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcredouble our efforts\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to hold onto our prosperity:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  For the future we must provide by maintaining what the present gives us and redoubling our efforts;\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Also, the harder we work, the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfruit of our labor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 will lead to virtue:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  it is hereditary to us to win virtue as the fruit of labor\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t change the habit of the fruit of labor\u00e2\u20ac\u201d even when i have a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcslight advantage in wealth and resources\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>In prosperity; don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t lose my hustle:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  it is not right that what was won in want should be lost in plenty\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Keep hustling x2.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t just say \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcyes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 without thinking<\/h2>\n<p>People will put greater demands on me; if I just accept their offers. Learn how to say \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  If you give way, you will instantly have to meet some greater demand, as having been frightened into obedience in the first instance.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t allow myself to be easily \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcfrightened into obedience\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 by others.<\/p>\n<p>Think longer before saying \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcyes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 blindly.<\/p>\n<h2>9. Learn how to give others firm refusals<\/h2>\n<p>Benefit of firm refusal; they will treat you as an equal:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  A firm refusal will make them clearly understand that they may treat you more as equals.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Learn how to say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in a firm, clear way. And people will treat you with more respect.<\/p>\n<p>As a practical tip; learn to delay, then you can say a firm \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcno\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 easier.<\/p>\n<h2>10. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be too rash; nor should I reflect too much:<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Ignorance produces rashness; too much reflection leads to timidity\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make decisions too quickly, and also don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t reflect too much before making a decision\u00e2\u20ac\u201d or I will lose the fire in my belly.<\/p>\n<h2>11. Bravery<\/h2>\n<p>The brave should be rational. We should understand the risks of danger, and what glory holds for us. And we must rationally go and meet our challenges:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them; glory and danger alike; and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be irrationally brave. Have a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcclear vision\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 of the difficulties what is ahead of me; but don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid.<\/p>\n<h2>12. Happiness comes from courage<\/h2>\n<p>The more courageous we are, the more freedom we will have. The more freedom we have, the happier we will be:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  The secret of happiness is freedom; and the secret of freedom is courage.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So in my life, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be scared or timid. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid of taking risks.<\/p>\n<p>The more risks I take, the more freedom I will have in life.<\/p>\n<p>The more freedom I have over my time, energy, resources, and money \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the happier I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be in life.<\/p>\n<p>So <strong>happiness is freedom.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seek to be \u00e2\u20ac\u02dchappy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d seek to have FREEDOM!<\/p>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t trade freedom for anything. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t accept a ton of money, just to sell your freedom, time, or energy.<\/p>\n<p>Seek to have more courage in life! To take more personal risks.<\/p>\n<h2>13. Glory<\/h2>\n<p>Work hard, to create glory for future generations:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Hatred is short lived; but that which makes the splendor of the present and the glory of the future remains forever unforgotten.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Any sort of hatred I get in the short-run will be short-lived, and forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>Hustle hard for my future generations.<\/p>\n<h2>14. Difficulty<\/h2>\n<p>Dig deep in my heart and soul to have courage, strength, to draw upon. I need this to fight \u00e2\u20ac\u02dctremendous odds\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 in my life:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  He who voluntarily confronts tremendous odds must have very great internal resources to draw upon.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If I try to start a business, I am against tremendous odds. Or try to do anything innovative.<\/p>\n<p>So be brave, and draw from my inner-courage. Be strong.<\/p>\n<h2>15. Democracy<\/h2>\n<p>No empire in a democracy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  I have often before now been convinced that a democracy is incapable of empire.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If we see a democracy turning into an empire (America) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d we aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t living in a true democracy.<\/p>\n<h2>16. Good fortune is bad<\/h2>\n<p>Too much good fortune (unexpected) and without hard work will make us indolent, lazy, and weak.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  The truth is that great good fortune coming suddenly and unexpectedly tends to make a people insolent; in most cases it is safer for mankind to have success in reason than out of reason; and it is easier for them to starve off adversity than to preserve prosperity.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rather, it is better for us to have success from hard work.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it is easier for us to \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcstarve off adversity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 than to preserve prosperity. Easier to fight off poverty, than to hold onto riches (we inherit).<\/p>\n<h2>17. Hope<\/h2>\n<p>We need to have hope to go on adventures, and know that I will succeed!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Hope leads men to venture; and no one ever yet put himself in peril without the inward conviction that he would succeed in his design.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We need to have an \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcinward conviction\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that we can succeed in whatever we do.<\/p>\n<p>And to truly believe in ourselves, is the first step to being more adventurous in life, and taking more risks.<\/p>\n<h2>18. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t grasp for more<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  You can now, if you choose, employ your present success to advantage, so as to keep what you have got and gain honor and reputation besides, and you can avoid the mistake of those who meet with an extraordinary piece of good fortune, and are led on by hope to grasp continually at something further, through having already succeeded without expecting it.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have the power to count my blessings right now, and already appreciate what I have. To extract the maximum advantage out of my present situation in life, my present goods, money, etc.<\/p>\n<p>I should not \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcgrasp continually at something further\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it will probably lead to my ruin.<\/p>\n<p>It makes more sense to realize that I have already succeeded\u00e2\u20ac\u201d to enjoy my success, and not grasp for more.<\/p>\n<p>Be grateful for what I have.<\/p>\n<h2>19. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t lose what I already got<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Many who have trusted in force to gain an advantage; instead of gaining anything more, have been doomed to lose what they had.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who try to gain even more advantages in life (beyond what are necessary) have been doomed to losing what they already had.<\/p>\n<p>So if I already have all the basics and necessities of life\u00e2\u20ac\u201d don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t vainly sail the treacherous seas. I might end up losing it all.<\/p>\n<h2>20. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t yield to my equals<br \/>\n2. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look up to my superiors (see them as my equals)<br \/>\n3. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look down on my inferiors (act equally, moderately towards them)<\/p>\n<h2>22. Having (some) money is advantageous<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>\n  Having abundance of gold and silver; make war; like many other things, go smoothly.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Having some money in life will make my life go smoothly. But how much is enough?<\/p>\n<h2>23.
