Before I started to shoot photography, I was a lot more shy and timid, especially around strangers.<\/p>\n<p>Especially through \u00e2\u20ac\u0153street photography\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d my personal confidence has 10x\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d. I can now talk to strangers, make small-chat with anyone I meet, and have more personal confidence to try out risky things.<\/p>\n<p>How can you harness photography to be less shy? Some ideas:<\/p>\n<h2>1. I used to have a lot more shame before I started photography.<\/p>\n<p>Photography has helped me become a child again. If you ever see children or babies dance, they have no fear of looking stupid.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, when we are beginner photographers, we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t worry about looking stupid, or dumb. We photograph anything we find interesting\u00e2\u20ac\u201d whether it be details on a wall, things on the floor, or even of strangers.<\/p>\n<p>So if you want to be less shy, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid of looking dumb. Our biggest fears and anxieties come from the fact that we want to look cool, we want others to respect us, and we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to become ostracized.<\/p>\n<h3>Assignment 1: Look like a tourist<\/h3>\n<p>One of the first ways to overcome your shyness is give yourself permission to look dumb \u00e2\u20ac\u201d by looking like a tourist.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that might mean wearing a bright-orange \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fanny pack\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (front-facing tourist pouch). Maybe that might mean wearing a silly hat when you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re taking photos. Or it might be wearing a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I love Paris\u00e2\u20ac\u009d shirt when you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re shooting in France (even when you are French).<\/p>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care about looking dumb. Photograph like an Asian tourist\u00e2\u20ac\u201d legs spread apart, and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be afraid to crouch down.<\/p>\n<p>The more touristy you look, the more people ignore you.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Even more awkward to ask a stranger to take their portrait.<\/p>\n<p>If you have the personal confidence to take a portrait of a stranger, you will no longer have fear to just make small-chat with a stranger.<\/p>\n<h3>Assignment 2: 5 yes, 5 no<\/h3>\n<p>If you want to be less shy, try the \u00e2\u20ac\u01535 yes, 5 no\u00e2\u20ac\u009d assignment. The idea is you approach a bunch of strangers on the street and ask permission to shoot their portrait. You need to keep asking until you get 5 people to say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153yes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, and 5 people to say \u00e2\u20ac\u0153no.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<h2>3. I look at the people sitting down, I look at the wall decorations, and I look at the tables and furniture.<\/p>\n<p>Of course whenever I do this, I get strange looks. It actually takes a lot of courage to be nosy and look around, especially when you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re indoors.<\/p>\n<h3>Assignment 3: Shoot a 360 degree panoramic<\/h3>\n<p>So as an assignment, try this out: whenever you go inside a cool hipster cafe (or wherever you find interesting), take our your camera, phone, whatever\u00e2\u20ac\u201d and shoot a 360 degree panoramic of the room. This will push you outside of your comfort zone, but also make you more comfortable \u00e2\u20ac\u0153looking like a tourist.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<h2>4.
