But what if the goal was to become more simple and basic photographers?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is simple photography?<\/h2>\n<p>Simple photography means to take away the complexity, stress, and frustration of photography.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It means to use the simplest camera possible.<\/li>\n<li>It means to reduce clutter and complexity from the frame, and to make simple photos.<\/li>\n<li>It means to <em>not<\/em> make \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcclever\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 photos\u00e2\u20ac\u201d but meaningful photos.<\/li>\n<li>It means to <em>not<\/em> be a pretentious photographer.<\/li>\n<li>It means to keep the photo-making process as simple as possible, in terms of technical settings, or post-processing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why do we disdain the simple?<\/h2>\n<p>We often criticize the simple.<\/p>\n<p>When we call people \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsimple-minded\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d we mean that they are stupid.<\/p>\n<p>When people call an idea \u00e2\u20ac\u02dca simple idea\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it is seen as something elementary and not worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>When people call a job as \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcsimple to do\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d they mean that it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t require any deep thought or effort.<\/p>\n<h2>Simple is hard<\/h2>\n<p>Rather, I think to do things simply is often <em>more<\/em> difficult, <em>more<\/em> complex, and requires <em>more<\/em> thinking (ironically enough).<\/p>\n<p>To make things simple is very hard. The world is full of inter-dependencies, complexity, and chaos. To make things simple, easy-to-understand, easy-to-navigate, and easy-to-use and comprehend takes a lot of consideration.<\/p>\n<h2>How to make it simpler?<\/h2>\n<p>In street photography, it is hard to make a simple street photo. Because the world and streets are chaotic. How can you take all the subjects in the streets, all the cars, traffic, and buildings\u00e2\u20ac\u201d and find peace, simplicity, and quiet?<\/p>\n<p>How can you make a simple photograph \u00e2\u20ac\u201d which has complex emotions? Which strikes an emotional chord with your viewer?<\/p>\n<h2>Tips how to make simpler photos<\/h2>\n<p>Some ideas to make simpler photos:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Subtract, not add<\/h2>\n<p>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think of what you can add to the frame, think about what you can <em>remove<\/em> from the frame.<\/p>\n<p>Subtract the fat, the superfluous, and the unnecessary.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Think hard of what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re trying to say<\/h2>\n<p>When you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re shooting on the streets, follow your intuition and gut.<\/p>\n<p>But when you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re editing and choosing your best shots, think hard of what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re trying to say with your photography. What message are you trying to put across?<\/p>\n<p>Think about this when you are working on a photo project. Try to have a simple message in your photos\u00e2\u20ac\u201d and try to make your images convey that emotion.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Make it easy for a child to understand<\/h2>\n<p>Children are the best bullshit-detectors.
