If you’re hungry for some photographic motivation \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 here are some honest and practical thoughts for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. Is it possible to stay entertained to keep photographing the same thing over and over again?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A zen<\/a> thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it possible we can keep photographing the same thing, over and over again\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 and stay motivated and entertained?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Yes, but to a certain point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Is it dynamic?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the best way to stay motivated in photography is to keep photographing dynamic<\/em> things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, cities are great because they are very dynamic. Always moving — moving people, moving cars, and the city-scape changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if you live somewhere boring \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 how can you find interesting novelty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walk around a lot, and photograph homes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Todd Hido<\/a> did a great photo book called ‘House Hunting’ and the basic concept:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just photograph (interesting) photos of (boring) homes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

If anything, it is my personal ambition to make the best suburb<\/a> street photography project of all-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      4. Black and white<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      I love color<\/a>. I love monochrome<\/a>. Yet, ultimately — I think for motivational purposes, monochrome is better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Why? You can transform more boring things and make them interesting with black and white. Far more difficult with color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In fact, I think making good photos in color is far more difficult than black and white, because you are dependent on the time of day, quality of light, and the colors. But if you’re just stuck, and need a shot of inspiration \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 harness monochrome!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The best monochrome masters to study:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      2. Josef Koudelka<\/a><\/li>
      3. Richard Avedon<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        5. Critique<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        This is the thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        If you want motivation in your photography, giving constructive critique to other photographers (and receiving constructive critique) is key.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

          My personal ambition behind building ARS<\/a> was simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          How can we create the first productive photography online community that can actually HELP<\/em> us photographers improve?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

          Honest feedback and critique, whether you attend workshops<\/a> or from friends\/family is useful. But if you want to improve your street photography, getting feedback from other street photographers seems to be best.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          6. Great cinema<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          If you want a good kick in the pants, these films<\/a> are best:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          2. 2001 Space Odyssey<\/a><\/li>
          3. Foundation (New Apple TV series)<\/li>

            7. Just shoot it.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Just shoot it<\/a>. This is what I realized:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Conditions will never be optimal. Conditions will always be sub-optimal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

            In fact, suboptimal is optimal<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            This means no matter how boring, how uninteresting your life is \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 just shoot it all anyways! Maybe even start a ‘boring’ photo series?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            And just upload your photos to your own blog, or upload them to arsbeta.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n
