What if your past self were in fact *INFERIOR* to your past self?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Why do we nostalgize about our past self?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Why do we have nostalgia for our past self? Theory —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We always see the past with rose-colored glasses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Why do we never think —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The past was *WORSE* than today?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\"ghost<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The cult of youth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"red<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the root of desiring our past (younger) selves is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We deify youth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

How are you superior now and today?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"selfie<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Today is in fact, superior to the past. For myself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. I am richer<\/li>
  2. I am more successful <\/li>
  3. I am stronger (physically)<\/li>
  4. I am more experienced<\/li>
  5. I am wiser<\/li>
  6. I got a kid (Seneca<\/a>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    So why do I sometimes long for the past? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Was the past really better?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    \"black<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    I often fantasize about times living in Vietnam<\/a>— where life seemed ‘better’. But was it really?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Well certainly things were *different* and more ‘exotic’ and new. But in terms of my philosophical understanding and personal artistic self-development, I was inferior in the past. I also was much skinnier and less physically strong and less buff<\/a> than I am now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Also now that I am no longer going to the gym and doing powerlifting (one rep max), I have transitioned and ‘pivoted’ to doing more home workouts (kettlebell swings<\/a>, Turkish getups, chin-ups on a chin-up bar on the door, etc). And the benefit —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    My arms and biceps are actually far more ‘swole’ than they were when I did one-rep max deadlifting<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    Then perhaps my trap was this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    “Goal<\/a> setting”.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    Then the answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    No goals, no hopes, no dreams. Just progress<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
