What is ‘progress’? And why does this matter, and is this what we are striving towards?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What is ‘progress’?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

‘Progressus<\/a>‘ in Latin — to advance. ‘Progredior’ (to step, walk forward).<\/a> To march forth, to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disdain for the past?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Inherent in this notion of progress is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking at the past, and having disdain for it. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rather, more joy and hope for the FUTURE. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why progress?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So the big question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*WHY* progress?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

My thought —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life is predicated on the notion of progress.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

To take the work of our ancestors, and to add to it. To make the past more full, to see a more glorious and beautiful future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why our pre-occupation with the past?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps our obsession with the past is a sign of weakness. A sign that —<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, everything was ‘better’ (a degenerate ‘Romantic’ notion).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Why the past? The past is solid, and immutable. Thus we find refuge in the past. Perhaps even nostalgia<\/a> is a vice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future will be more beautiful and more glorious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We must never think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I wish things were back to the way things *USED* to be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Rather — <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wow, the past was so much worse than now. I am much happier now and today, and I am far more interested and exciting in the future I will pave!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
