We all know the feeling\u00e2\u20ac\u201d having to do something without wanting to do it. The feeling of going to the gym and meeting a gym trainer against your own will. The feeling of having to do extra \u00e2\u20ac\u0153busy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d work while you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in school. The feeling of having to stay late at your job, even though you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re done with work, only to appease your boss.<\/p>\n

There are a lot of things in life that feel like chores\u00e2\u20ac\u201d why make your photography one of them?<\/p>\n

There are so many articles on the internet (on this blog as well) that you \u00e2\u20ac\u0153should\u00e2\u20ac\u009d photograph everyday, and if somehow you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not inspired everyday, there is something wrong with you.<\/p>\n

I used to believe in the need of photographing everyday\u00e2\u20ac\u201d but as time goes on, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m starting to realize that isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t true for everybody.<\/p>\n

For some photographers, photographing everyday is a good way for them to stay inspired, and stay \u00e2\u20ac\u0153in shape\u00e2\u20ac\u009d creatively. But for many other photographers, shooting everyday for the sake of it is a chore.<\/p>\n

So a simple suggestion: if taking photographs ever feels like a chore for you, simply don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take photos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take your camera everywhere you go<\/h2>\n

I personally believe that it is a good idea to carry your camera everywhere you go (even if it is your smartphone). Because you never know when a good photography opportunity may happen. Personally, there have been many times I regretted not having my camera with me (sometimes the best photo opportunities happens in the least expected times and places).<\/p>\n

However if carrying your camera around you feels like a chore; simply don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t carry your camera everywhere you go.<\/p>\n

I was at a talk with Bruce Gilden in NYC, and one question a person asked was, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do you carry your camera everywhere you go?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Gilden said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153God no. I only take my photos when I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m on assignment, or doing some serious photography.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Even when Bruce Gilden went to Tokyo to teach a workshop, he didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t bring his camera at all (Gilden didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have any photography projects in Tokyo, and wanted to focus on teaching).<\/p>\n

Your camera should be a tool of empowerment, rather than a ball-and-chain which restricts you from enjoying your life. If carrying your camera with you everywhere you go feels like a chore, just simply leave it at home, and bring it with you when you want to make photos.<\/p>\n

If you have peace of mind only taking photos once a week or once a month\u00e2\u20ac\u201d do what makes you happy. There are no \u00e2\u20ac\u0153rules\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d only suggestions.<\/p>\n

Photography is an act of self-discovery; not of discovering the outside world.<\/p>\n

I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned more about myself through photography than any other medium. Through photography I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned my love of society, of foreign places, and of people. Through my photography I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned to appreciate the small things in life more, and know that true happiness comes from the connections we have with others. Photography has taught me that I can be as happy living in a boring suburb as living in a glitzy city.<\/p>\n

Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make your photography a chore. If you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to take photos; don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take photos. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let anybody force you to do anything that is against your will.<\/p>\n

Everyone is differently creatively, and everyone has a different working process. The way you photograph is unique and idiosyncratic to your personal life experiences.<\/p>\n
