some other languages) they say <em>make<\/em> a photograph.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What is the difference between the two?<\/p>\n<p>Well for me, I think the concept of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153taking\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photograph sounds forceful\u00e2\u20ac\u201d like you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re stealing something from someone. So when it comes to street photography, it sounds violent and aggressive. To \u00e2\u20ac\u0153take\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photograph of someone is to steal their soul.<\/p>\n<p>However on the other hand, to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153make\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photograph is to create something beautiful, and to be creative. I also like the idea of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153making\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photograph\u00e2\u20ac\u201d because it sounds more collaborative. Why? For me, it gives me a chance to <em>collaborate<\/em> with them, <em>engage<\/em> them in dialogue, and to make them a part of the <em>image-making<\/em> process.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, whenever I approach a stranger, I like to say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Excuse me sir, I love your look. Do you mind if I <em>made<\/em> your <em>portrait<\/em>?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I say this instead of, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do you mind if I <em>took<\/em> your <em>photo<\/em>?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>When you say, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do you mind if I <em>made<\/em> your portrait\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d it catches people off-guard. We aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t used to saying that in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153American English\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d but it sounds more professional, and more intimate. The same goes for the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153portrait\u00e2\u20ac\u009d instead of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photo\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d because how often do we have a <em>portrait<\/em> of us made? And not only that, but you can offer to email a portrait of them afterwards, and they have a new Facebook profile picture, and you have an artistic photo you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re happy with. Everyone is happy.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t to say that you should never take photos candidly or without permission. But when it comes to making a photo in the streets\u00e2\u20ac\u201d think to yourself; what are you really trying to do with your street photography? Are you going to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153shoot from the hip\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (taking a photo without looking through the viewfinder at waist-level) of a homeless guy, turning it black-and-white, and calling it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153art\u00e2\u20ac\u009d? Are you really \u00e2\u20ac\u0153making\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photo there\u00e2\u20ac\u201d or are you \u00e2\u20ac\u0153taking\u00e2\u20ac\u009d a photo of that poor guy?<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, the talk about ethics can get a bit messy. Essentially <strong>photograph others how you would like to be photographed<\/strong>, and try to <em>make art<\/em>, rather than just steal photos.<\/p>\n<p>Photograph from the heart, from your gut,
