SPonatanea is a very active and organized street photography collective based out of Italy. In the interview, I talked to them about their formation, activities, and upcoming projects. A.g.: What is the motivation behind SPontanea?\u00c2\u00a0How was it formed?<\/b><\/p>\n

SPontanea: SPontanea was born in 2013. The idea was to found an Italian collective dedicated to Street Photography, capable of facing on equal terms the other existing international realities, hoping to become over time a quality reference point in Italy. The founding members were chosen on the basis of a reciprocal respect and appreciation – we already knew each other from the web – in order to bring together a wide range of styles and approaches, representing a solidly structured and well defined Italian photographic vision on Street Photography.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We also thought to give a few other street photographers (what we refer to as \u00e2\u20ac\u2122selected authors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122) the opportunity of a constant contact and dialogue with us where us members follow and monitor their work within a certain period of time. It has been an exciting initiative, albeit complex and delicate, and we are satisfied with what we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve done so far and with the many stimuli given and received. Despite the intense activity we are a young but still settling collective, but we already have a common set of ideas for our common purposes.<\/p>\n

How would you describe the photography scene in Italy? (Street photography or otherwise?)<\/b><\/p>\n

During the last few years photography in Italy has experienced a great development through many festivals, an attentive focus on photographic culture and the creation of foundations and photography schools. At the same time many excellent photographers achieved important results at an international level. Photographic exhibitions are much visited and they attract the interest of the media.<\/p>\n

Street photography did not lag behind. However, together with the increasing number of people getting closer to the style, with the growth in interest in the street photography genre we have also observed a growing number of people who speak about or teach street photography without having the necessary experience and without having demonstrated any talent. It is easy to create and organise such events through the web especially if someone has the support of big brands and photographic institutions as these events are seen as an easy way to make a profit. We think that SPontanea has further stimulated the development and the attention toward Street Photography in Italy, albeit not always with the same objectives as ours.<\/p>\n

After us, many others have followed the same path, founding collectives or gathering in groups, and, more importantly, starting to think about the quality of the works presented, which was one of our main goals: trying to adopt, in a sometimes illusory and sometimes self-referential environment as the internet, \u00c2\u00a0a critical approach to the continuous delivery of images and demonstrate that while Street Photography could be approached by everyone, when it comes to quality it is not within the reach of all.<\/p>\n

How did you think the internet changed photography? Do all of the members meet regularly face to face or do it online?<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/i>We keep in contact on a daily basis online using a private forum, where we exchange ideas, opinions, advice, works, and where we joke around and have fun as well. We live scattered in different places and meeting face to face regularly would be difficult. Internet makes keeping in touch possible. However we meet in person as often as possible, on occasion of exhibitions, workshops, festivals to which we have been invited, and it always is a true pleasure to spend time together.<\/p>\n

Internet surely changed the way photographs but also human relations, are shared. On the one hand it gives everyone the opportunity to propose themselves, to share their work online, offering the possibility to discover new interesting photographers that would otherwise be difficult to find, but on the other hand, internet makes everything too fast and superficial, giving credit and visibility \u00c2\u00a0to activities often too much self-referenced, without criticism or screening.<\/p>\n

We are well aware of this issue and we try as much as possible to be thoughtful and conscious when we share our works, with a careful and strict critical review of our images and projects before presenting them.<\/p>\n

What are the best things and the difficulties of being part of the collective?<\/b><\/p>\n

The enthusiasm and urge of living the passion for photography, and the false myth that being chosen as member of a collective means one is a \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcbetter\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 photographer, lead many photographers to join collectives, underestimating the difficulties that it takes in term of time and commitments: issues that inevitably arise after the enthusiasm of the early stages.<\/p>\n

In a collective it is very important that members cooperate and share tasks among themselves. It takes a lot of commitment, time and personal resources to prepare activities and these can only happen if everyone does their bit. SPontanea is achieving small results. We believe it is because in our group there is a good level of understanding and a functional division of the tasks, and above all, there is an ongoing and disinterested mutual support.<\/p>\n

We firmly believe that the discussions taking place amongst ourselves on the works we propose is crucial for our personal growth and we think that what we can achieve together is more than the sum of what we achieve individually. We try to put this idea in practice, knowing that it takes time and hard work.<\/p>\n

Can you tell us more about your group project city limits? What was the process like when the collective was working on the project?<\/b><\/p>\n

We thought that for a collective it is very important to work together on a common idea, point of view or chosen theme. City limits was our first collective work. It lasted one year, and each photographer developed the theme independently according to their personal vision. Involving actively in this project our ‘selected authors’ (in addition to the members) was extremely stimulating for everybody. At certain time intervals we uploaded our project photos in our private forum where each of us could express their opinions, likes, doubts, ditch photos, modify sequences, point out the most significative and strongest photos, always keeping in mind the final goal. For a few of us, City Limits is still an open, ongoing project; for others it is a completed work that gave great personal satisfaction; for some others instead the project never started. In fact it is not mandatory for the photographers to partecipate to the collective project and only who wants – and who \u00e2\u20ac\u2122feels’ for the chosen theme -participates to it. The group also has a new project coming up called “The Same Place. Can you give us an idea as to what it will be about?<\/b><\/p>\n

We will be shortly presenting our second collective project, ‘The Same Place’, realised in a little less than a year, and always curated by all of us through a close, continuous confrontation.<\/p>\n

You can already see a selection of photos from the various personal \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcSame Place\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 projects buying a copy of the first issue of the SPontanea’s self-produced magazine. With a regularly issued magazine we intend to concretely give space to printed photos, articles and projects related to our photographic activity. Each photographer chose ‘his’ Same Place, developing it with great attention and creativity, showing how also candid street photographs can create compelling works that can tell stories, moments, places, people. We want to give Street Photography a broad value, a complex vision, certainly slightly different from what most people think.<\/p>\n

Spontanea will be in the Miami street photography festival, can you tell us how Spontanea will participate in the festival?<\/b><\/p>\n

Being invited by the festival organizers was a pleasant surprise to us. In only a few years the MSPF has become one of the most important events dedicated to Street Photography, both because of the participation of important photographers and high quality works, and\u00c2\u00a0because of the high interest and participation the photography contest gets.<\/p>\n

We did not expect such an\u00c2\u00a0invite and it is for us a reward for the work carried out so far to enhance Street Photography in Italy. Also another international collective was invited to the festival:\u00c2\u00a0 <\/span>The Street Collective.<\/p>\n

We were naturally thrilled to accept the invitation, but this also makes us feel responsible and it commits us to do more in the future.<\/p>\n

Three of SPontanea’s members – Mary Cimetta, Stefano Mirabella and Umberto Verdoliva – will be part of the selection panel, along with Dmitry Stepanenko and Vineet Vohra. In addition, we are awaiting from the organisation the details around the exhibition of our works at the festival. Hopefully some of us will be in Miami during the festival and it is going to be a wonderful experience.<\/p>\n

How does one become a member of the collective? Can you tell us your selection process?<\/b><\/p>\n

To date, there is not a particular selection process, nor we organize submissions windows.<\/p>\n

We already reached the maximum number of members we can manage and we are not thinking of adding more authors in the short term.<\/p>\n

The founding members chose each other. Over time, a few left and new members have been integrated upon the other members’ proposal and unanimous approval.<\/p>\n

The list of the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcselected authors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is subject to a specific invitation as well. Over time, we identify upcoming Street Photographers whose work we find interesting and invite them to join the selected authors list for 2 years. During this time they work with us and confront with us in the realisation of photos, projects and collective works. The continuous interaction and exchange is good for everybody and produces excellent results, even if it is a resource-consuming activity.<\/p>\n

We have a similar approach with the ‘guest’ projects by external authors that we feature on our website. Whenever a good project, or the style of an author with a personal view, in line with our concept of Street Photography, strikes us, we invite the author to present a project in SPontanea, more precisely here:\u00c2\u00a0http:\/\/www.spontanea.org\/progetti\/progetti-ospiti\/<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, over time this space has been enriched by meaningful works, showing an entirely Italian high-quality vision, that rewards us and that hopefully rewards also the authors that came to attention and that were chosen by us.<\/p>\n

What would be your advice to those who want to start their own collective?\u00c2\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

A collective put together from a list of good photographers, just to form an ‘elite’ or a talent show-off, is not enough to build a meaningful,\u00c2\u00a0important activity. We believe that there should be a strong motivation, a common purpose and the wish to achieve something good and lasting, alongside a constant personal and collective research.<\/p>\n

Being part of a collective only becomes important when you grow personally with the help of the others, thanks to the stimuli given and received, otherwise it is not worth starting one. We believe that the final results are proportional to the efforts made.<\/p>\n

We would finally like to add just one thing, concerning our new initiative, the ‘StreetFolio’.<\/p>\n

It is a\u00c2\u00a0full day dedicated to the review of Street Photography-only portfolios, by Street Photographer reviewers only, that will take place in Florence on October 10th 2015.<\/p>\n

We believe that it is a significative and unique initiative, the first of its kind in Italy, to promote Street Photography. There will be a face to face confrontation, from street photographer to street photographer. We think your blog, with the amount and quality of followers, is the best place to anticipate a great news concerning this event which is that Richard Bram, major american street photographer, in-Public collective member and our friend, will participate to the event and along with all of us, will review, evaluate and award the works submitted.<\/p>\n

Qual \u00c3\u00a8<\/strong> la motivazione dietro Spontanea? Come si \u00c3\u00a8 formato il collettivo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spontanea \u00c3\u00a8 nato nel 2013 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c L\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 idea era quella di fondare un collettivo italiano dedicato alla fotografia di strada che si confrontasse a pari livello con altre realt\u00c3\u00a0 internazionali esistenti, con la speranza che diventasse nel tempo, un punto di riferimento di qualit\u00c3\u00a0 in Italia. La scelta dei membri fondatori, \u00c3\u00a8 avvenuta attraverso la reciproca stima esistente tra noi che ci conoscevamo gi\u00c3\u00a0 sul web e in funzione di una diversit\u00c3\u00a0 di stili e di approcci che rappresentassero, per questo genere, una visione fotografica italiana gi\u00c3\u00a0 ben strutturata e definita.<\/p>\n

Abbiamo pensato anche di dare la possibilit\u00c3\u00a0 ad alcuni fotografi di strada di avere un confronto continuo con noi e di curare i loro lavori nell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122arco di un periodo di tempo. E\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 stata una iniziativa molto stimolante anche se complessa e faticosa, ma siamo soddisfatti di quello che oggi abbiamo creato e degli stimoli dati a tanti. Nonostante l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122intensa attivit\u00c3\u00a0 ci stiamo ancora assestando, siamo un collettivo giovane, ma un filo conduttore \u00c3\u00a8 gi\u00c3\u00a0 stato creato in termini di amicizia e unit\u00c3\u00a0 d\u00e2\u20ac\u2122intenti.<\/p>\n

Come \u00c3\u00a8 considerata la fotografia in<\/strong> Italia? (Fotografia Street o altra)<\/strong><\/p>\n

La fotografia in Italia in questi ultimi anni ha avuto un importante sviluppo, molti festival, l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122attenzione sempre pi\u00c3\u00b9 mirata verso la cultura fotografica, la nascita di fondazioni e di scuole per la fotografia ma anche tanti ottimi fotografi che hanno ottenuto risultati notevoli a livello internazionale. Le mostre di fotografia sono molto visitate, come anche l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122interesse che i media mostrano verso di essa.<\/p>\n

La Street Photography non \u00c3\u00a8 stata da meno. Sempre pi\u00c3\u00b9 persone si avvicinano a essa ed \u00c3\u00a8 aumentato l’interesse verso questo genere fotografico. Tuttavia ci sembra che di pari passo sia aumentato anche il numero di coloro che insegnano e parlano di fotografia street senza averne la necessaria esperienza o aver dimostrato alcun talento. Pensiamo che Spontanea abbia aiutato a stimolare l’attenzione e lo sviluppo della fotografia street in Italia, sebbene non sempre si condivida i nostri stessi obiettivi. Dopo di noi altri hanno seguito la stessa strada formando collettivi o unendosi in gruppi, nel migliore dei casi, iniziando a riflettere sulla qualit\u00c3\u00a0 dei lavori prodotti, ed era questo uno dei nostri principali obiettivi: tentare, in un ambiente a volte illusorio, come il web, di mettere un filtro critico alla continua erogazione di iniziative ed immagini spesso deboli a confronto con quelle internazionali, cercando, con il lavoro, di dimostrare quanto effettivamente la street photography sia per tutti ma non, in termini di qualit\u00c3\u00a0, alla portata di tutti.<\/p>\n

Come<\/strong> pensi che internet abbia cambiato la fotografia? i membri di SPONTANEA si incontrano regolarmente faccia a faccia o solo on-line?<\/strong><\/p>\n

C\u00e2\u20ac\u2122incontriamo on line in un forum privato e lo facciamo giornalmente, scambiandoci pareri, idee, contenuti, consigli, scherzando e divertendoci anche. Abitiamo in posti diversi e lontani, incontrarsi sarebbe difficile e questo \u00c3\u00a8 uno dei vantaggi principali di internet, comunque appena possibile, ci vediamo in occasioni di mostre, workshop o festival a cui siamo invitati ed \u00c3\u00a8 sempre una grande gioia.<\/p>\n

Effettivamente internet ha cambiato i parametri classici di condivisione non solo delle fotografie ma dei rapporti umani. Da un lato ha dato la possibilit\u00c3\u00a0 a tutti di proporsi facilmente e di condividere contenuti, di mettere on line i propri lavori, dando la possibilit\u00c3\u00a0 di scoprire autori interessanti che sarebbe stato difficile conoscere, ma dall\u00e2\u20ac\u2122altro, ha reso quasi tutto superficiale e veloce dando credito e visibilit\u00c3\u00a0 ad attivit\u00c3\u00a0, spesso, troppo autoreferenziali e senza nessuna possibilit\u00c3\u00a0 di critica o di selezione.<\/p>\n

Pertanto, essendo consapevoli di questo problema, tentiamo di essere il pi\u00c3\u00b9 possibile riflessivi nella condivisione dei nostri lavori, basandoci su di una attenta e severa valutazione critica delle immagini e dei progetti che realizziamo prima di presentarli.<\/p>\n

Quali<\/strong> sono le cose migliori e le difficolt\u00c3\u00a0 di far parte di un collettivo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oggi sulla spinta e l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122entusiasmo di vivere la passione fotografica, e sul falso mito che chi fa parte di un collettivo possa essere ritenuto pi\u00c3\u00b9 bravo, molti si uniscono in essi ma spesso, sono inconsapevoli delle difficolt\u00c3\u00a0 a cui vanno incontro in termini di tempo, impegno, discussioni e risultati finali, problemi che emergono subito dopo la fase di entusiasmo e formazione iniziale.<\/p>\n

In un collettivo \u00c3\u00a8 molto importante la collaborazione tra i membri e la ripartizione degli impegni. La preparazione di attivit\u00c3\u00a0 richiede grande costanza, impiego di tempo e di risorse personali, se ognuno non fa la sua parte diventa difficile andare avanti; se stanno arrivando dei piccoli risultati \u00c3\u00a8 perch\u00c3\u00a9 nel nostro gruppo c\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c3\u00a8 una buona intesa e una ripartizione funzionale dei compiti e, cosa fondamentale, un aiuto reciproco continuo e disinteressato.<\/p>\n

Crediamo con fermezza che il confronto tra noi sul lavoro che proponiamo sia fondamentale per la propria crescita personale e siamo della idea che quello che si pu\u00c3\u00b2 realizzare tutti insieme sia certamente migliore di quello che la somma di ogni singolo possa fare. Cerchiamo di mettere in pratica questo pensiero, sapendo che c\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c3\u00a8 bisogno di tempo e di duro lavoro.<\/p>\n

Puoi dirci<\/strong> di pi\u00c3\u00b9 sul vostro primo progetto collettivo \u00e2\u20ac\u0153city limits\u00e2\u20ac\u009d? Qual \u00c3\u00a8 stato il processo di realizzazione collettivo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Abbiamo pensato che per un collettivo sia molto importante esprimere una idea comune, un punto di vista su di un argomento scelto. City limits \u00c3\u00a8 stato il nostro primo lavoro sviluppato in un anno, autonomamente da ognuno secondo la propria visione. Coinvolgendo in questo progetto anche il gruppo degli autori selezionati, ci\u00c3\u00b2 \u00c3\u00a8 stato estremamente stimolante per tutti; lavorare su di un obiettivo comune. Ad intervalli di tempo caricavamo le foto realizzate nel forum interno e ognuno di noi esprimeva il suo parere, cosa piaceva o cosa non andava del lavoro degli altri, tagliando foto, sequenze o indicando le immagini pi\u00c3\u00b9 forti e significative, ma sempre tenendo bene in mente l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122obiettivo finale. City limits per alcuni continua ancora, per altri \u00c3\u00a8 un lavoro terminato che ha portato a grandi soddisfazioni personali, per altri ancora non \u00c3\u00a8 mai iniziato. Non \u00c3\u00a8 obbligatorio partecipare al lavoro collettivo, solo chi vuole e \u00e2\u20ac\u0153sente\u00e2\u20ac\u009d il tema deciso. Spontanea<\/strong> sar\u00c3\u00a0 ospite del festival di fotografia di strada di Miami, ci puoi dire qualcosa sulla vostra partecipazione?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Per noi \u00c3\u00a8 stata una piacevole sorpresa essere stati inviatati dagli organizzatori del festival. Il MSPF in pochi anni \u00c3\u00a8 diventato una delle maggiori manifestazioni dedicate alla street photography, sia per la partecipazione di grandi fotografi sia per i lavori esposti ma soprattutto per la grande adesione e interesse che il concorso fotografico riceve.<\/p>\n

Non ci aspettavamo assolutamente un invito cos\u00c3\u00ac importante, rivolto anche ad un altro collettivo internazionale THE STREET COLLECTIVE, che senza dubbio ci gratifica del buon lavoro svolto finora in Italia e per la fotografia di strada italiana.<\/p>\n

Abbiamo accettato con grande piacere, naturalmente, ma sappiamo che ci responsabilizza e c\u00e2\u20ac\u2122impegna ulteriormente nel futuro.<\/p>\n

Tre membri di SPONTANEA, Mary Cimetta, Stefano Mirabella ed Umberto Verdoliva, faranno parte, insieme a Dmitry Stepanenko e Vineet Vohra del pannello dei giudici di prima fase, stiamo attendendo i dettagli da parte della organizzazione, per l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122esposizione dei nostri lavori. Forse qualcuno di noi sar\u00c3\u00a0 presente a Miami nel periodo del festival, sar\u00c3\u00a0 sicuramente una esperienza fantastica.<\/p>\n

Come si diventa<\/strong> membro del collettivo? Puoi dirci il vostro processo di selezione?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Oggi, non esiste un processo particolare di selezione, ne tanto meno organizziamo submissions chiedendo ai fotografi di proporsi.<\/p>\n

Abbiamo raggiunto gi\u00c3\u00a0 il numero massimo gestibile di membri e non pensiamo a breve di integrare altri autori. I membri fondatori, si sono scelti vicendevolmente, poi nel tempo qualcuno \u00c3\u00a8 andato via e altri sono stati integrati su proposte accettate e valutate da tutti.<\/p>\n

Anche la lista degli autori selezionati che seguiamo e curiamo \u00c3\u00a8 fatta su specifico nostro invito. Nel tempo, individuiamo fotografi di strada interessanti e l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122invitiamo ad entrare nella lista dei selezionati per due anni. In questo periodo saranno costantemente al nostro fianco confrontandosi con noi nella realizzazione di foto singole, progetti e sul lavoro collettivo. Una interazione continua e stimolante che fa bene a tutti e produce ottimi risultati finali anche se \u00c3\u00a8 una attivit\u00c3\u00a0 molto dispendiosa.<\/p>\n

Quando ci colpisce un buon lavoro, o lo stile di un autore che pratica con personalit\u00c3\u00a0 e in linea con la nostra stessa idea la fotografia di strada, lo invitiamo a presentare il proprio lavoro in SPONTANEA, precisamente qui: http:\/\/www.spontanea.org\/progetti\/progetti-ospiti\/<\/a><\/p>\n

Come potete osservare, nel tempo, questo spazio \u00c3\u00a8 diventato ricco di lavori significativi e che mostrano una visione tutta italiana di qualit\u00c3\u00a0 che gratifica noi e speriamo anche chi viene scelto e notato.<\/p>\n

Quale sarebbe<\/strong> il vostro consiglio a coloro che vogliono avviare un proprio collettivo?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>Un collettivo che nasce come lista di bravi fotografi messi insieme solo per creare una \u00e2\u20ac\u0153elite\u00e2\u20ac\u009d o per dire \u00e2\u20ac\u0153guardate quanto talento abbiamo\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, non basta per costruire un\u00e2\u20ac\u2122attivit\u00c3\u00a0 significativa ed importante, crediamo ci debba essere una forte motivazione, uno scopo comune e il desiderio di realizzare qualcosa di rilevante e che possa rimanere in futuro, supportato da una ricerca costante personale e complessiva.<\/p>\n

Far parte di un collettivo diventa importante solo se cresci singolarmente attraverso l\u00e2\u20ac\u2122aiuto di tutti gli altri, dagli stimoli che dai e da quelli che ricevi, altrimenti non vale la pena avviarlo, crediamo serva poco e i risultati finali sono proporzionali all\u00e2\u20ac\u2122impegno profuso.<\/p>\n

Infine, vorremmo solo aggiungere una cosa, parlare della nostra prossima iniziativa chiamata STREET FOLIO.<\/p>\n

In pratica \u00c3\u00a8 una giornata intera dedicata alla lettura di lavori fotografici esclusivamente di street photography che si svolger\u00c3\u00a0 a Firenze il 10 Ottobre 2015.<\/p>\n

Credo che sia una iniziativa originale e significativa, fatta per la prima volta in Italia, per propagandare e dare ulteriore spazio alla street photography. Ci sar\u00c3\u00a0 un confronto dal vivo, da street photographer a street photographer. Per questo, visto il bacino di utenti del tuo blog su cui la nostra intervista sar\u00c3\u00a0 presentata, \u00c3\u00a8 il modo migliore di anticipare una bella notizia per questo evento, cio\u00c3\u00a8 la presenza tra noi di Richard Bram, grande street photographer americano, oltre che un amico, membro del collettivo in Public che insieme a tutti noi, valuter\u00c3\u00a0, legger\u00c3\u00a0 e premier\u00c3\u00a0 i lavori che ci saranno sottoposti.<\/p>\n
