In this lecture I cover what &#8220;street portraits&#8221; are (and how they differ from &#8220;street photography&#8221;), how to approach strangers, how to overcome the fear of rejection, as well as practical tips for shooting street portraits.<\/p>\n<p>You can see and download all the slides for free on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/erickimphotography\/how-to-shoot-street-portraits\" target=\"_blank\">Slideshare<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0or on <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0BxslI7nEWY93VHFoeGdsNzFRdVU\/view?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\">Google drive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about street portraits, check out my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FGGoPSYFcHQ&amp;list=PL9bSEn3-fotWNTDuHsjr0P7Ytvu8C5aBF\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Street Portraits POV videos <\/a>on YouTube.<\/p>\n<h2>30 Tips When Shooting Street Portraits<\/h2>\n<p>Below are some of the tips I included from the presentation on how to shoot street portraits (and a few extra freebies):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Keep working the scene until your subject\u00c2\u00a0forgets about you<\/li>\n<li>Ask your subject to move to an interesting background<\/li>\n<li>You don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need to photograph your subject&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0face<\/li>\n<li>Take a photo of your subject\u00c2\u00a0looking at you \/ not looking at you<\/li>\n<li>Focus on the edges<\/li>\n<li>Ask your subject to look down \/ look up<\/li>\n<li>Provoke a response<\/li>\n<li>Remember you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll never see them again (don&#8217;t miss out on the opportunity)<\/li>\n<li>Be genuinely interested in your subject<\/li>\n<li>Compliment your subject<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your subject\u00c2\u00a0before asking to take their photograph<\/li>\n<li>Realize that just because you had a good interaction doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t mean it is a good photograph<\/li>\n<li>Look for dramatic light<\/li>\n<li>Ask your subject: is it okay if I move you?<\/li>\n<li>Slightly touch\u00c2\u00a0your subject to change their posture, direction, or position<\/li>\n<li>Ask your subject not to smile<\/li>\n<li>Shoot both landscapes\/vertical photos<\/li>\n<li>Shoot from different perspectives<\/li>\n<li>Get close, then get closer<\/li>\n<li>Talk to your subjects while photographing them<\/li>\n<li>Realize a posed photograph can look candid<\/li>\n<li>Capture the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153unguarded moment\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/li>\n<li>Try to shoot with \/ without a flash<\/li>\n<li>Capture hand gestures (get their hands close to their face)<\/li>\n<li>Shoot the same framing more than once (realize that their face direction might move, or facial gesture)<\/li>\n<li>Look for the surrounding environment (environmental portraiture)<\/li>\n<li>Realize a street portrait is more about yourself, not your subject<\/li>\n<li>Try to capture\u00c2\u00a0an \u00e2\u20ac\u0153authentic\u00e2\u20ac\u009d look that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look too posey<\/li>\n<li>Focus on details (use macro mode)<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t feel guilty about &#8220;wasting your subject&#8217;s time&#8221; (they love the attention)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>What are some tips you have when it comes to shooting street portraits, \u00c2\u00a0or any questions you might have?
