Why? Many reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Less boring than pointless repetitions<\/li><li>Raw numbers [higher] is good for your ego<\/li><li>Going &#8216;super saiyan&#8217; mode before your max attempt lift is phenomenal. to me, powerlifting is 99.9% mental.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">anything is possible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery deadlift &#8216;4 plates&#8217; [<a href=\"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/deadlift\/\">405 pounds<\/a>]. Why? After I finally lifted 405 pounds, I had this insane epiphany:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>oh shit&#8211; I can do anything \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 if I just put my mind to it, put in the practice, and give it my 100% mental effort and courage!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">training triumphs everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/bwKHamWY?preloadContent=metadata&amp;hd=0&amp;cover=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training and practice is everything. By no means do I have &#8216;good genetics&#8217;. My dad is a &#8216;skinny fat&#8217; dude, my hands and wrists are relatively small, and I have a smaller frame compared to other strong guys at the gym. But still &#8212; my regimen of increasing my one-rep max attempt by 5 pounds every week seems to have been working [adding 2.5 pound weighs to each side of the barbell, every week].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With physical power comes mental power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/foBKB6zw?preloadContent=metadata&amp;hd=0&amp;cover=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am convinced \u00e2\u20ac\u201d if you got a strong body, you will gain a stronger mind. After starting powerlifting, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve benefitted these ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Improved mood <\/li><li>improved love for my body and physique <\/li><li>stronger willpower and mental fortitude <\/li><li>more creative ideas come to me while at the gym <\/li><li>less shyness when talking to strangers, and less shyness when shooting street photography <\/li><li>less fear of pain and death.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">we cannot be modern Spartans, but we can become modern day powerlifting heroes, blogging heroes, photo and video heroes \u00e2\u20ac\u201d the ultimate you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/ceB7NIyz?preloadContent=metadata&amp;hd=0&amp;cover=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become insanely epic.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">everyone can powerlift. I sometimes utter some mantras to myself like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153monster\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153light weight baby! \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Ronnie Coleman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s phrase).<\/li><li>feeling mentally prepared: listen to your body.<\/li><li>position myself, take my time <\/li><li>strive to empty my mind <\/li><li>before lifting, I do a power grunt, and then pull with all of my might <\/li><li>my mind goes blank, and I totally become one with my body <\/li><li>I strive to power up all my muscles and legs, to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153lock out\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the lift <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Powerlifting tips <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/RHTtAvJl?autoPlay=1&amp;loop=1&amp;muted=1&amp;persistVolume=0&amp;preloadContent=metadata&amp;hd=0&amp;cover=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">everyone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s internal rhythm is different, as their hype up routine. But my tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t feel pressured to be quiet. Be loud!<\/li><li>take up lots of space in the gym <\/li><li>for max deadlift attempt, use a mixed grip, and use some chalk for better grip.<\/li><li>i like wearing the same outfit to the gym everyday for consistency. I like my outlier NYC merino wool t shirt, merino wool leggings and athletic shorts, and minimalist \u00e2\u20ac\u0153water shoes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (no sole, no sock inside)\u00e2\u20ac\u201d I bought them on amazon for $15.<\/li><li><strong>no belt: belt is unnecessary<\/strong>. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve proven you can lift big without a belt.<\/li><li>i prefer <a href=\"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2019\/10\/07\/powerlifting-while-fasting\/\">fasting before powerlifting<\/a>. More focus. More energy. More strength.<\/li><li>i do a 15 minute yoga stretch, dynamic stretch routine before lifting. I focus on my hips (pigeon pose) and other poses. The more flexible in my hips, the higher my squat and deadlift has gone up.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t fear failure <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-videopress\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"VideoPress Video Player\" aria-label='VideoPress Video Player' width='500' height='281' src='https:\/\/videopress.com\/embed\/ZHRxcMt2?preloadContent=metadata&amp;hd=0&amp;cover=1' frameborder='0' allowfullscreen allow='clipboard-write'><\/iframe><script src='https:\/\/v0.wordpress.com\/js\/next\/videopress-iframe.js?m=1674852142'><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I fail a lot in powerlifting. Every week I attempt to increase my one rep max by 5 pounds. For example if I deadlifted 455 last week, this week I will try 460.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">but I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t always succeed. Sometimes I can get the weight off the ground half an inch, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not strong enough to lift it. Or when I squat, I break parallel, and only get up 60% of the way, then bail the bar behind me (power rack). Or when doing heavy dumbbell press if I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get it up, I drop the weights to the side. Or when benching, if I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get it up I ask my spotter to help me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">failing is actually quite empowering in powerlifting. Why? You realize that failing isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a big deal and not scary! I actually think powerlifting is 1000x safer than any other sport, because you can control all the variables. In soccer you get tackled you can tear an Achilles. In basketball you can fuck up your ankles.
