{"id":214652,"date":"2020-03-08T14:54:34","date_gmt":"2020-03-08T21:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/?p=214652"},"modified":"2020-03-08T14:54:35","modified_gmt":"2020-03-08T21:54:35","slug":"subtle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/08\/subtle\/","title":{"rendered":"SUBTLE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What will last, what won&#8217;t last?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t make it too obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My thought &#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>when it comes to artwork, what makes it last?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My thought &#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>artwork which isn&#8217;t too obvious.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subtle. &#8216;God is in the details&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, when it comes to photography or cinema, I love it when there are tiny details which make a great frame. When the composition is too obvious, it is boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">do you have a motivation or incentive to re-watch or re-experience it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good film:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The more times you re-watch it, every time is better than you remembered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why? Small details. subtle. Like finding &#8216;where&#8217;s Waldo&#8217;!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">high-concept?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with jay-z or Eminem, their raps run deep. You re-listen to their songs and albums, and you can discover the hidden metaphors or the hidden double (or triple) entendres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subtle is better?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you make things more subtle, it requires more effort from the viewer to engage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, subtle rap lyrics can be dissected. They&#8217;re more interesting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the same with photos&#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>don&#8217;t make the meaning of the photo too obvious.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">complexity in morality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why I love Miyazaki; complexity in morality. All the good guys are a bit &#8216;evil&#8217;, and all the &#8216;evil&#8217; guys are a bit good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what makes things interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>morality is complex.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, human motives are insanely complex. Perhaps this is what makes Trump so interesting to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>he seems very dumb on the outside, but he is far more complex than people think.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also same goes with Kanye:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>People think Kanye is crazy, but it is far more complex than that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">knowledge is subtle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe when it comes to knowledge-production and philosophy, this is what makes things very interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>the world is infinitely more complex than we can ever understand.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems that &#8220;basic&#8221; minds tend to make the complex of the world over-simplified. The world is 1000000x more complex and humans are 100000000x more complex than basic psychologists think. it is difficult for most humans to think in terms of complexity. And <em>to discover hidden truths in plain sight &#8212; is this the joy of the philosopher<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">when to make things obvious and in-your-face, and when to make it subtle?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In-your-face ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>When it has to deal with life or death.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subtle ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>When it deals with art, aesthetics, or knowledge.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ERIC KIM<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What will last, what won&#8217;t last?
