{"id":196358,"date":"2019-12-12T12:56:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T20:56:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/?p=196358"},"modified":"2019-12-12T17:20:54","modified_gmt":"2019-12-13T01:20:54","slug":"recovery-vs-augmentation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2019\/12\/12\/recovery-vs-augmentation\/","title":{"rendered":"Recovery vs Augmentation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When it comes to physical fitness, we talk much about &#8220;recovery&#8221;&#8211;the days you don&#8217;t lift in order to become stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My thought: instead of calling it &#8220;recovery&#8221;, better to call it &#8220;augmentation&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When we workout hard at the gym, and we say we need to &#8216;recover&#8217;, inherent in it is the feeling:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>If I were simply stronger, I could recover faster.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, this is perhaps the wrong thinking. When we lift a very heavy weight, we create micro-tears in our muscles. The more we practice the movements, the more accustomed we become. The basic notion is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>You attempt to lift a new maximum weight once.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For example if last week I <a href=\"https:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/16\/why-photographers-should-deadlift\/\">deadlifted<\/a> 445 pounds (once) last week, then this week I will attempt 450 pounds (once). If I successfully lift 450 pounds this week, I have achieved a new &#8220;PR&#8221; (personal record). The fear we will hurt or injure ourselves.
