My heuristic of whether a good is luxury or not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they call it \u00e2\u20ac\u0153luxury\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, it isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t luxury. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a luxury car?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Based on Google search:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BMW, Audi, Lexus, Mercedes aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t \u00e2\u20ac\u0153true\u00e2\u20ac\u009d luxury brands, because by having to signal it in their titles, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re \u00e2\u20ac\u0153trying too hard\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    Insecurity?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If a brand was a true luxury good, why would they need to call itself a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153luxury brand\u00e2\u20ac\u009d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153luxury\u00e2\u20ac\u009d?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I believe luxury is art. Luxury means to care so deeply about perfection, to maximize the utility, beauty, aesthetics, and use for the user. Luxury as an aesthetic and ethical thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Why is luxury seen as a vice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    For millennia, luxury has been seen as a vice. But I think luxury is a virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Luxury tests the human spirits. It elevates us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    For example, I see Apple as a luxury brand, in the best possible way. An Android or Samsung phone does more or less the same as an iPhone, except the user experience and joy is 1000x enhanced in an iPhone. Same goes with the vast superiority of an iPad over an Android tablet, or a MacBook vs Pc windows laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Luxury is sexy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I love Tesla cars. Why? They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re sexy and functional. They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re certainly \u00e2\u20ac\u0153luxury\u00e2\u20ac\u009din the best sense of things. Tesla is self-confident, and doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have any insecurity issues about how cool they look or perform. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s luxury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Leica is a luxury brand. You can do the same thing with a Fujifilm camera (the Fujifilm camera even might have better image quality or high ISO capabilities). But the difference? The attention to detail in the Leica, the build quality, and the luxury of simplicity<\/strong>. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve found that with luxury goods, it is a will to simplicity. Kind of like how I really like my $100 Outlier.NYC merino wool black shirts, which just look like a normal black t shirt. True luxury goods are actually quite low-key (like a Herm\u00c3\u00a8s Burkin bag, which has no obvious branding on it). Any brand that has to flaunt the logo (Louis Vuitton) isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a real luxury brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Should we strive towards luxury?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I prefer the notion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Own a few luxury things that will last a very very long time and not get \u00e2\u20ac\u0153out of fashion\u00e2\u20ac\u009d than owning lots of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153affordable\u00e2\u20ac\u009d stuff (which has less durability and quality). <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    I think it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s better from a minimalism perspective, better ecologically, and better for zen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Less, but the best. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Own less, but better!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
