I then came upon an insightful comment from Steve Foon about his experience from switching from using a DSLR to a rangefinder for street photography. Therefore I asked him to do this guest blog post and he graciously accepted! The post you are about to read is incredibly thorough and well-thought out. Nikon D100 and a Canon FTb.<\/p>\n<p>I quickly realized that I need to upgrade and get some really good glass.<\/p>\n<p>More about this is in another article.<\/p>\n<p>So here I am\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 shooting away with a Nikon D3S and a Nikkor 70-200mm lens.<\/p>\n<p>Got some really good stuff but something was missing.\u00c2\u00a0 I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t put my finger on it.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting \u00e2\u20ac\u0153street\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I found that a lot of my shots came from either a distance or me trying to not make myself too noticeable.\u00c2\u00a0 Black gaffer tape does wonders on camera markings.<\/p>\n<p>Switching to a wide lens, things got a little better\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. I was more involved and aware of what I was capturing but so were my subjects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/2.jpg\"><img DSLR and pointing it at someone started to alter my shots from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>On a recent Auto Show, I had to use the Nikon.\u00c2\u00a0 One of those car show models was getting ready.\u00c2\u00a0 Being a red blooded male, I raised the camera to snap a quick pic.\u00c2\u00a0 The minute the camera rose to my eye\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. busted. \u00c2\u00a0The look from her would <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>There&#8217;s that rangefinder thing&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After reading and hearing things about rangefinders, I had to find out for myself.<\/p>\n<p>I thought that using a viewfinder versus looking through the lens would be worse.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve grown comfortable using DSLR\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s and all the wonderful thing electronics can do\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. matrix metering, multi zone focus, etc\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.<\/p>\n<p>Heck, you want good images.\u00c2\u00a0 You want BIG glass\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. right?<\/p>\n<p>How can those tiny lenses do without Crystal Nano Coating, ED Elements, etc<\/p>\n<p>How would using something that is actually a throw back to the early 1900\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s be better than my 21<sup>st<\/sup> century, ultra high ISO, polycarbonate, magnesium, weather sealed,10 fps, alphabet soup technological wonder?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Education:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After messing around with different combination of camera formats and lens combinations, I took the plunge in the rangefinder world.<\/p>\n<p>My very first use left me a bit perplexed.<\/p>\n<p>The focus was hard to do \u00e2\u20ac\u201c lining up two images into a single line is totally different from what I would do with my SLR\/DSLR when manually focusing.<\/p>\n<p>My first few shots looked like\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. Crap.<\/p>\n<p>Focus \u00e2\u20ac\u201c poor.\u00c2\u00a0 Exposure \u00e2\u20ac\u201c wrong.<\/p>\n<p>How was looking at an image slightly off center from where the lens is going to be better<\/p>\n<p>Because I was determined to understand this rangefinder thing, I decided to buy one.\u00c2\u00a0 Since I was shooting digital, I needed a digital rangefinder.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately or fortunately, it was going to have to be a Leica.<\/p>\n<p>Tip\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.<\/p>\n<p>One thing I discovered is to try to find a camera store you trust and who has a staff who are photographers themselves.\u00c2\u00a0 For me the store in my area \u00e2\u20ac\u201c CameraWest in Walnut Creek, CA is the place.<\/p>\n<p><a minutes of practice is all you need to get comfortable and competent with focus on a rangefinder.<\/p>\n<p>After a while, I got pretty good about focusing even in darker environments.<\/p>\n<p>So the rumor about a rangefinder being faster than auto focus was sort of true.<\/p>\n<p>Canon shooters seem to still have the advantage with really fast moving objects\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. but for what I shoot, I seem to do just as well if not better at times manually focusing<\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s something to this.\u00c2\u00a0 I can focus and even pre-focus just by feel.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, I realized that the weight and bulk was gone.<\/p>\n<p>It was sort of odd holding the camera in my hands differently but then it hit me.<\/p>\n<p>I was more comfortable shooting.\u00c2\u00a0 My subjects took little notice of me.\u00c2\u00a0 Those who did notice me seem to react differently.\u00c2\u00a0 More willing to be photographed &amp;\/or I was being treated as a tourist \/ novice\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s even more quiet.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s slower here<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/h3>\n<p>Without the weight and especially without a mirror moving around, that old formula for keeping a steady shot of not setting a shutter speed slower than the size of the lens (example:\u00c2\u00a0 50mm no slower that 1\/50s) seem to have changed.\u00c2\u00a0 I can easily hold the camera image at least two stops slower than I would dare with my SLR\/DSLR.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no VR or IS in the lens or camera to help.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Composition changes<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.<\/h3>\n<p>A portrait photographer was introduced to a rangefinder and the first words out of her mouth was, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153this will slow me down\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. That may not be a bad thing\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>You see the world differently using a rangefinder.\u00c2\u00a0 I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t put my finger on it.\u00c2\u00a0 Just that not having to peer down the barrel of a lens and holding a large chunk of metal \/ polycarbonate, etc\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 device in front of my face changes things.<\/p>\n<p>All you see is a large bright window.\u00c2\u00a0 A full frame DSLR has a brighter viewfinder versus a cropped sensor DSLR.\u00c2\u00a0 But put a rangefinder to your eye\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. bright and clear.<\/p>\n<p><a for that fact any rangefinder, you have to actually move things.<\/p>\n<p>The silky feel of a focus ring.\u00c2\u00a0 The click click click of the aperture ring (on the lens).<\/p>\n<p>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all about sensations.<\/p>\n<p>Before the rangefinder, I expressed this missed feeling from my DSLR.\u00c2\u00a0 I was handed a Zeiss lens.\u00c2\u00a0 Thought time had gone back.\u00c2\u00a0 The feeling was there but still\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.something wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t quite the same as using the rangefinder.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Price of Admission<\/strong>:<\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How much did you say???<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I had always thought that Leica was just a camera for the rich.\u00c2\u00a0 Heck, some people buy them and never really use them.\u00c2\u00a0 They sit in glass cases gathering dust.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t understand Leica until I used it.<\/p>\n<p>Solid, tough and most importantly\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. those lenses.<\/p>\n<p>Images taken with a Leica is something you actually can tell.<\/p>\n<p>With my DSLR, I find that I spend time in Lightroom making adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>With the Leica, crop it a bit and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m done.<\/p>\n<p>A used digital Leica M8 will easily cost you about $4K with a lens.<\/p>\n<p>A new Leica M9 with one piece of really great glass\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. $10K.<\/p>\n<p>A used M9\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. good luck.\u00c2\u00a0 Just finding a new one is a challenge.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I want one.\u00c2\u00a0 What should I do? <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span>Spending a lot of money isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t easy.<\/p>\n<p>A Leica costs as much as a down payment on a new car or a nice used car.<\/p>\n<p>But if you find yourself wanting a rangefinder, here are my thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>There are alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>You may have to shoot film\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. Which in itself is wonderful and another topic for another day.<\/p>\n<p>Since spending your money on glass is more important than spending it on a body, there are Voitlanders and Zeiss Ikons out there.\u00c2\u00a0 They accept Leica mounts lenses and is a good way of getting into the rangefinder.\u00c2\u00a0 Zeiss glass is really good too !!<\/p>\n<p>You can still find a lot of older Leica M\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s out there.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re old but were built like tanks and still work well.<\/p>\n<p>I shot with a film Leica recently.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said earlier\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 another topic for another day.\u00c2\u00a0 But to sum it up\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. glass\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6. trying to find the perfect match for me.<\/p>\n<p>Since \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Street\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is the medium I love, the 35mm f\/1.4 is the lens of choice for me.<\/p>\n<p>Started with a Leica Summicron (f\/2) 35mm.\u00c2\u00a0 Great lens.\u00c2\u00a0 Small and sharp.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted faster glass though.<\/p>\n<p>Leica Summilux (f\/1.4) 35mm last generation.<\/p>\n<p>Better because of the faster lens.<\/p>\n<p>Noticed a problem with \u00e2\u20ac\u0153back focus\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and decided to go all out and get the latest newer version of that Summilux\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lens lust here.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So is a Rangefinder &#8220;it&#8221;?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Yes and No.<\/p>\n<p><a have been missed with the Leica\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.. automation is good and bad.<\/p>\n<p>We tend to be passionate people when it comes to our art.\u00c2\u00a0 The feeling I get from a rangefinder is range.<\/p>\n<p>I had a 200-400mm Nikkor and wish I didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to let it go to pay for the Leica.<\/p>\n<p>Really close up\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6.
