Why read? My thought:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading is one of the best and direct creative stimuluses we can do in order to improve and quicken our own thinking. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m against the notion of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153reading for the sake of reading\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. Reading which doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t quicken you or spur you to action is bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Simple heuristic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only read what is fun, interesting, and challenging to you. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There is no such thing as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153good\u00e2\u20ac\u009dor \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bad\u00e2\u20ac\u009dliterature or books. Only interesting or boring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apparently Alexander the Great traveled on his military campaigns with a copy of the Iliad and Odyssey. Perhaps he got inspiration from the heroes in Homer, in order to embolden his own actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There seems to be two types of reading:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading which inspires and emboldens you, and reading which pacifies you. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I like Thucydides<\/a> who wrote in the introduction to his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153History of the Peloponnesian War\u00e2\u20ac\u009d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I write this history to inspire future generations of humanity. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The sucker mistake people have in history is this preoccupation with facts and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153truth\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. No. History doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have much of a duty to be \u00e2\u20ac\u0153factually accurate\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d it is about documenting human strength and valor, in order to inspire virtue to future generations of humans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stop reading once it gets boring <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m currently reading some essays from Ralph Emerson Waldo<\/a>, but I like to skim, skip around, and only read which interests me. I think it is silly to try to read everything for the sake of it. As readers, we must be insanely selective. And use your own gut to guide yourself in terms of what is interesting to you. And once a text bores you, either skip ahead, skim further (until it gets interesting), or stop reading the book altogether and move onto a new book which actually does interest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The way we have been trained to read in school is bad. It presupposes that there are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153good\u00e2\u20ac\u009dand \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bad\u00e2\u20ac\u009dreading practices. This is silly. You must discover the reading practices which resonate with YOU, not with our stiff (and insecure) schoolteachers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of my favorite reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Iliad by Homer (keep searching until you find a translation which you like).<\/li>
  2. Antifragile by Nassim Taleb (and Skin in the Game)<\/li>
  3. The Will to Power by Nietzsche (and The Gay Science)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a trillion things you can read, but my tip:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Stick to the classics. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    There are few (if any) modern books published in the last 150 years which are of any interest (besides Nassim Taleb). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Ancient Greek and Roman poetry is great. Reading the Iliad is 1000x more fun and entertaining than any modern movie (besides perhaps John Wick<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What I do on iPad:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Read in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153split screen\u00e2\u20ac\u009d mode, and write notes in IA WRITER of certain phrases which I like, or points I find inspiring.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    Digital or analogue?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    I prefer reading ebooks (.epub format, or PDF) on my iPad. Why? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    First of all, all these old school texts and books are mostly available online for free (Project Gutenberg<\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Secondly, weight. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m mostly on the road, and I cannot bear extra weight in books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Third, I prefer iPad over Kindle because I can actually write notes as I read. Also the default iBooks App is excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Read yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    My simple suggestion is to just experiment. And don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think that there is a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153superior\u00e2\u20ac\u009dmode of reading. Strive to discover YOUR own personal preferences when it comes to reading!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
