With traditional social media, this is what happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You upload your photo online, and the algorithm of Facebook\/Instagram determines how \u00e2\u20ac\u0153worthy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d it is to be shown in the news feed of your friends\/followers \u00e2\u20ac\u201d based on arbitrary measures (posting time, content type, frequency of posting)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Now what is the problem with this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is that social media turns into a treadmill\u00e2\u20ac\u201d like the red queens race in Alice in Wonderland, you gotta keep running faster to just keep in place. You got to keep uploading photos to get more likes, and if we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t keep getting the likes, we feel shitty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does Facebook\/Instagram want?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Facebook (who owns Instagram) desires this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For you to become a crack addict (addicted to likes) and for you to keep \u00e2\u20ac\u0153engaging\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with the platform, in order for you to view and click on advertisements. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Now I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think this is necessarily \u00e2\u20ac\u0153bad\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153evil\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d it makes sense. Facebookgram is a business, and they gotta make money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the problem is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Facebook\/Instagram isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the ideal place to get honest feedback on your photography, which we consider our artwork. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Facebookgram is good if you want to upload photos to get the likes, and generic comments from friends\/family. But we cannot get real feedback on our photos \u00e2\u20ac\u201d how to improve, develop, and grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And without having real feedback on how we can improve and become stronger visual artists \u00e2\u20ac\u201d we are at a serious disadvantage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more you help others, the more you help yourself <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With ARS<\/a>, the notion is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You give others honest feedback and critique on how they can improve, and others also help give you critique and feedback on how to improve. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

What is unique with ARS is our \u00e2\u20ac\u0153double blind\u00e2\u20ac\u009d algorithm: You don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know who is giving feedback on your photos, and others don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know who is giving feedback to them \u00e2\u20ac\u201d thus, people are more honest and direct!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of people are afraid:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If there is online anonymity, won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t that bring out everyone\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inner-troll? <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The answer is no. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our data and metrics from Ars<\/a> have proven that 99.999% of people are \u00e2\u20ac\u0153good actors\u00e2\u20ac\u009d. Out of our 5,000+ members, there has only been 1-2 trolls. Data doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t lie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, this is what we discovered which is fascinating with Ars:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t make comments publicly visible, there is no incentive for any troll-like behavior. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve had my fair share of trolls in my day, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve actually met some of them in real life. And this is what I learned about their psychology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most trolls are very intelligent people, who are just very sad and lonely, and need affirmation or a hug. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A constructive and productive online community for visual artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The ARS team (Kevin, Cindy, Annette, Jun, Ben) believe this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can become the change which we wish to see in the world, to make an online platform for photographers and visual artists to actually become empowered and grow together. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, we believe that the internet isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153zero sum\u00e2\u20ac\u009d platform. There is need to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153compete\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with other photographers or visual artists, because the pie isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t limited. We can all grow infinitely together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
