The worth of an artwork? Whether it survives or dies.<\/p>\n

Imperishable Photography:<\/h2>\n

\n I will make a work more lasting than bronze. – Horace<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course you cannot predict how long your work will last. But these are some practical thoughts and ideas:<\/p>\n

Study the past masters<\/h2>\n

Study the ancient masters of art, and ask yourself \u00e2\u20ac\u201d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Why has their artwork lasted until now?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Was it because of their superior marketing and PR? Or was the work itself phenomenal? Or because they were lucky? Or a bit of all?<\/p>\n

My thought:<\/p>\n

\n Generally speaking, the artworks which last seen super-human; that it wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t humanly possible for a single individual to create this thing.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For example, it is incredible to think that Michelangelo painted the Sistine chapel and carved the Pieta\u00e2\u20ac\u201d by himself!<\/p>\n

\n

What makes great photography?<\/h2>\n

With photography, it seems that generally speaking \u00e2\u20ac\u201d photographs of people last the longest.<\/p>\n

For example, street photographs<\/a>, documentary photos, reportage and news photos \u00e2\u20ac\u201d photos that involve human beings.<\/p>\n

Or portraits of human beings (Richard Avedon<\/a>, Helmut Newton<\/a>).<\/p>\n

\n

Do projects last?<\/h2>\n

Some projects last \u00e2\u20ac\u201d<\/p>\n

For example, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153In the American West\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by Richard Avedon<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d because the concept was simple: portraits of people all around America against a simple background, with enigmatic people.<\/p>\n

Generally when we remember projects, it is because the title and the project concept was simple and<\/em> the photographs within the project were powerful.<\/p>\n

\n

SUITS<\/h2>\n

When I think about my projects, I think one of the projects that have stood the test of time is my suits<\/a> project. Why? My thoughts:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Simple title and concept (Suits, obviously pictures of men in suit and ties)<\/li>\n
  2. Intense pictures \u00e2\u20ac\u201d shot close, often with flash<\/a>, with strong emotions (hand gestures, stressed body language)<\/li>\n
  3. Consistent aesthetic: Shot on Kodak Porta 400 film<\/a>, 35mm lens<\/a>, film Leica<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  4. Stringent editing<\/a>: Only strong images. This is a simple idea: make every picture in your photograph as a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153standalone\u00e2\u20ac\u009d picture (if you saw the photograph outside of the project, it would still be a strong single image), and make the pictures fit within the theme or idea of the project.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Go hard<\/h2>\n

    Time is a ruthless hammer which destroys that which isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t strong enough.<\/p>\n

    If you desire to make immortal photos, make them strong enough, robust enough to be able to withstand the blows of lady time\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s merciless hammer.<\/p>\n

    Make photos more lasting than bronze<\/h2>\n

    To sum up,<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Be exacting in your own standards in your photographs. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have pity on your weaker photos; let them die.<\/li>\n
    2. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t stop pursuing your project<\/a>; it is like digging for oil \u00e2\u20ac\u201d you must keep drilling deeper into the ocean, to find that liquid gold.<\/li>\n
    3. Keep it simple, consistent, and strong. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t complicate it or make it unnecessarily fancy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
