We cannot breathe and live without inspiration.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Inspiration vs Motivation<\/h2>\n

  1. Inspiration<\/strong>: Having an external source breathe life, vigor, and ideas into you.<\/li>\n
  2. Motivation<\/strong>: Having the vigor and energy to undertake action by yourself. Motivation as movement and action.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    We need both.<\/p>\n

    We need inspiration from role models and our heroes from the past. We need motivation<\/a> (inner-motivation) to actually do something, create something, make something, produce something.<\/p>\n

    Don’t get suckered with inspiration porn<\/h2>\n

    Too many people get stuck in the first camp. They are just hungry for inspiration, and keep stimulating themselves with external inspiration.<\/p>\n

    But we must recognize:<\/p>\n

    \n Inspiration is the bridge to motivation.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    It is good to have external inspiration in order to<\/em> have motivation to actually create our artwork!<\/p>\n

    Once again, to be clear:<\/p>\n

    \n Motivation is more important than inspiration.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

    But when we are lacking motivation, it is good to find external sources of inspiration.<\/p>\n

    For myself, I find the greatest sources of inspiration from:<\/p>\n

    1. Philosophers (Nietzsche<\/a>, Seneca<\/a>, Nassim Taleb<\/a>, Heraclitus<\/a>)<\/li>\n
    2. Poets (Virgil<\/a>, Homer, Horace<\/a>, Dante)<\/li>\n
    3. Painters (Raphael<\/a>, Leonardo<\/a>, Piet Mondrian<\/a>, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol)<\/li>\n
    4. Photographers (Josef Koudelka<\/a>, Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/a>, Richard Avedon<\/a>)<\/li>\n
    5. Musicians (Kanye West<\/a>, JAY Z<\/a>, Kendrick Lamar<\/a>, Eminem, Big Sean, Dr. Dre<\/a>)<\/li>\n
    6. Film-makers (Akira Kurosawa<\/a>, Stanley Kubrick<\/a>)<\/li>\n
    7. Soldiers (King Leonidas from ancient Sparta)<\/li>\n
    8. Entrepreneurs (Steve Jobs<\/a>, Elon Musk<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      To me, seeing how they lived their lives is a good blueprint for me. I’m also inspired by their creations and art works.<\/p>\n

      But once again,<\/p>\n

      \n Inspiration that doesn’t lead to creation is empty.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      \n

      Buy Books, Not Gear<\/h2>\n

      \"\"<\/p>\n

      An aphorism we can follow if we want more inspiration:<\/p>\n

      \n Buy books, not gear<\/a>.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      If you want more inspiration to make stuff, make photos, or discover new ideas, books are the best. They are the distillation of wisdom, and artwork.<\/p>\n

      Eventually all technology and tools get outdated, but books last forever. And good books get better as time goes on.<\/p>\n

      Randomness, chaos, and chance is good way to discover new artwork. This is why I like going to random museum exhibitions. I never know what sources of inspiration exist.<\/p>\n

      Also, another tip:<\/p>\n

      \n Discover who inspired your personal heroes.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      For example I’ve always been curious:<\/p>\n

      \n Who inspired Steve Jobs?\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

      Upon doing some research on Google and reading Steve Jobs Walter Isaacson biography on him, I discovered that Steve Jobs was highly inspired by Edwin Land, who invented Polaroid. Thus, I started to research the life and philosophy of Edwin Land, to discover deeper inspiration.<\/p>\n

      Never forget; our heroes and inspirations aren’t demi-gods. They’re just like me and you. They just work a lot harder.<\/p>\n
