When I started to shoot street photography, I did it because it was interesting, challenging, and fun for me! I loved to explore the streets, talk to people, and I also loved to share lessons I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned in street photography with others (on this blog and via workshops<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But the problem was this:<\/p>\n

\n The more famous I became in street photography, I stopped having (as much) fun in street photography.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Why? A hidden desire to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153prove\u00e2\u20ac\u009d myself as a good street photographer. Rather than just shooting street photos that brought me happiness, I tried to make \u00e2\u20ac\u0153good\u00e2\u20ac\u009d street photos to validate myself.<\/p>\n

Now I think about my street photography for about a decade+ of experience, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m starting to realize more and more that street photography must be fun, and the best street photographer is the most authentic street photographer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is authentic street photography?<\/h2>\n

Authenticity in street photography:<\/p>\n

\n Desire to shoot like yourself. Only shoot what interests yourself, and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look at others for approval.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This means,<\/p>\n

\n Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t feel pressured to share all of your street photos online.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And,<\/p>\n

\n Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be hungry for likes in your photography.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Practical ideas<\/h2>\n

    \n
  1. Pursue personal photo projects which interest you. <\/li>\n
  2. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t take your photography seriously. Focus on fun over \u00e2\u20ac\u0153seriousness\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in your photography. <\/li>\n
  3. Recognize there is no \u00e2\u20ac\u0153right\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153wrong\u00e2\u20ac\u009d way to shoot street photography. Just shoot photos according to your own personality!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
