What makes a good composition? My idea:<\/p>\n

\n A non-static (dynamic) composition.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/p>\n

Contrast<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

One of the most important principles in photography composition is having contrast (figure to ground<\/a>) between your subject and the background.<\/p>\n

To see whether your contrast is strong, just look at your photos as small thumbnails<\/a>. There needs to be a clear separation or contrast between the subject and the background, or you won’t be able to tell what is going on.<\/p>\n

Definition of contrast<\/h2>\n

The word contrast comes from Latin: “contra” (against).<\/p>\n

So contrast is having a picture with lightness against darkness. White vs black.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The English word “contrast” comes from the Italian word “contrastare<\/a>” (contra + stare). Contra (against) + stare<\/a> (to stand, remain).<\/p>\n

So for me, the word contrast means:<\/p>\n

\n Against standing still.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Or<\/p>\n

\n Anti-static.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\n

In praise of movement<\/h2>\n

\"Barber<\/p>\n

I think the best photos are the ones that have energy, vigor, movement. I quite like curves and the “arabesque<\/a>” (squiggly line) composition.<\/p>\n

In practical words:<\/p>\n

\n Make more photos with curves or people moving around!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Ask your subjects to move their bodies, hands, or their heads.<\/p>\n

Photograph them in motion, with blur.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Photograph hand gestures or dynamic body language.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Moving subjects + flash<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Photograph your subjects while they’re moving, and use a flash. This can help freeze them, but still give you a sense of movement in the photo.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Tilt your camera<\/h2>\n

Tilt your camera to make the compositions more dynamic. Or have your subjects arms into diagonal and triangle forms:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Take lots of photos while dancing with your subjects, and choose the most dynamic one afterwards:<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Blur is good.<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Or just shoot at a high ISO (1600-3200) and embrace the blur.<\/p>\n

Reflections<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

If you photograph your subject in reflections, the composition is less static.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\n

Avoid boring compositions<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to determine a “good” composition. It’s easier to know what a boring composition is (static compositions are boring).<\/p>\n

Thus, one idea to focus on:<\/p>\n

\n Avoid making boring compositions.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You define “boring”. Avoid making boring compositions in your own eyes!<\/p>\n
