Dear friend,

A basic idea: why make better compositions in your photography?

Weak is boring

"1"

"2"

"3"

"6"

"7"

"8"

"9"

"10"

Some ideas:

First of all, a photograph that has a weak composition isn’t interesting to look at. Thus, you need a strong, dynamic, and engaging composition to catch the attention of your viewer.

"1"

"2"

"3"

"4"

"5"

What do you do once you have the attention of the viewer? Then you are able to present them your picture; your image, and have the opportunity to make a deep impression or impact on them.

Thus, in order to make an emotional impact on your viewer, you need a strong composition.

What makes a strong composition?

"fib"

"gtriangle"

"thirds"

"goldentriangle"

"ruleofthirds"

"abstract"

"Print"

"2"

"Print"

To me, some things to consider:

  1. Is the background simple? Are there any distractions or superfluous elements in the frame which distract from your subject?

  2. Is there energy, emotion, and dynamism in the photo? Is there anything interesting happening in your photo? Do you see engaging eye contact, hand gestures, movement, or action happening in the picture?

  3. Do you see your soul in your own photo? Why are you the only one who can make the picture?

Composition can also be seen as visual aids. You help direct the eyes of your viewers. Consider composition lines and arrows like road signs, which help guide the eyes of your viewers.

    Some visual aids:

    1. Leading lines

    2. Triangles

    3. Strong figure to ground (contrast)

    4. Strong edges; separation between your subjects and the background

    5. Unique perspectives: Photos shot from a very low perspective, or a high perspective.
