Dear friend,<\/p>\n

A practical idea for you: if you want to shoot more, don’t baby your gear. Instead, give yourself permission to use and abuse your gear!<\/p>\n

To start off, it seems prudent to be careful and to baby your gear. After all, you spent your hard money and cash on it. You don’t want it to get destroyed, because perhaps one day you want to re-sell it, or you just don’t want to break it– so you can use it for a long time.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

But consider– cameras, gear, equipment<\/a>, and tools were meant to be used! And we shouldn’t abuse our gear for the sake of it; but if you ding up your camera, scratch it up, and put in a few dents– it is okay! Consider it like ‘battle scars’ for your equipment.<\/p>\n

This is the funny thing; even with my film Leica MP<\/a> (black paint)– it is seen as beautiful when you wear it down, and the glittering bronze-brass reveals itself. It is the beauty of the ‘patina’– the “wabi-sabi<\/a>” of the use of it. In simple words,<\/p>\n

\n The more you use it, and the more it wears, the more beautiful it is!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For example, it is like raw selvedge denim– the more you wear it in, the more beautiful it becomes!<\/p>\n

It also applies to human beings– I find elderly people with wrinkles more beautiful than younger people. To me, the wrinkles are beautiful. A face with no scars, wrinkles, or wear marks have no character.<\/p>\n

So friend, don’t be afraid to bang up your gear. When in doubt, use and abuse your gear.<\/p>\n

Go on more epic adventures with your camera, take more risks<\/a>, and put on some beautiful wear and tear into your camera, gear, and life!<\/p>\n
