Note the &#8216;juxtaposition&#8217; between the fat man on the left, and the skinny man on the right.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The word \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcjuxtaposition\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 is just a fancy word for \u00e2\u20ac\u02dccontrast.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>To be specific\u00e2\u20ac\u201d juxtaposition is when you put two opposite things together, and the contrast of those two things becomes interesting.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fat person next to skinny person<\/li>\n<li>Tall person next to short person<\/li>\n<li>Dark colors next to light colors<\/li>\n<li>Circles next to rectangles<\/li>\n<li>Old people next to young people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Generally with \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcjuxtaposition\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u201d you are making a statement through the contrast of elements you put in the frame.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2>Examples of juxtaposition in photography<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Person and shadow:<\/h2>\n<p>Note the juxtaposition between this woman, and her shadow. Who is real, who is fake? Diptych<\/h2>\n<p>If you put two photos (that are similar) next to one another, they call it a diptych. Diptych comes from Greek:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n  From the late Greek &#8216;diptukha&#8217; (putting two writing tablets together; folded in two).\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a diptych of my mom and me. We are both lying down, in similar positions, looking like we are in a coffin (dead). Study juxtaposition in art (study <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/leonardo\/\">Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>), and from the <a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/learn-from-the-masters\/\">masters of photography<\/a>. Study images, don&#8217;t just look at them. Try to understand how and why certain juxtapositions work, and why others don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>When in doubt, substitute the word &#8216;juxtaposition&#8217; with &#8216;contrast&#8217; or &#8216;comparison.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>When you&#8217;re starting off &#8212; trying to create juxtapositions in photography, keep it simple.
