However, the reason their work still has lasted, because it is classic. They have paved the way for all of us in photography. They experimented with the medium of photography, and pushed it forward. They made photography an acceptable art form. We have a great deal of debt to pay them.<\/p>\n<p>This period of time is roughly the 1920\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Andre Kertesz<\/h3>\n<p>I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d recommend first starting to learn about\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/16\/10-lessons-andre-kertesz-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Andre Kertesz<\/a>, who was one of the first photographers who inspired\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/09\/17-lessons-henri-cartier-bresson-taught-street-photography\/\">Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(essentially the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153godfather\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of street photography). Andre Kertesz harnessed the classic form of geometry to photography, and was prolific all the way until his death.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/h3>\n<p>Of course, you need to study the work of\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2014\/12\/09\/17-lessons-henri-cartier-bresson-taught-street-photography\/\">Henri Cartier-Bresson<\/a>, who first took 35mm photography to the next level. Alfred Stieglitz<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/30\/8-lessons-alfred-stieglitz-can-teach-you-about-photography\/\">Alfred Stieglitz<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was a photographer, who first pushed photography to be taken acceptably as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153art.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Photography wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be where it is today without him.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Chapter 2: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153New school\u00e2\u20ac\u009d photographers<\/h2>\n<p>I consider this \u00e2\u20ac\u0153new school\u00e2\u20ac\u009d of photographers the next wave of photographers who innovated in photography, from around the 1950\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s onwards to the 1980\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s:<\/p>\n<h3>4. Garry Winogrand<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/20\/10-things-garry-winogrand-can-teach-you-about-street-photography\/\">Garry Winogrand<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0was probably one of the most prolific street photographers to have ever lived. He shot because he loved it, and he was one of the innovators of the 28mm lens, getting close to his subjects, and creating \u00e2\u20ac\u0153edgy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, dynamic, and off-kilter compositions. Not all his photos are pretty, but his work ethic, distaste for the art world, and his down-to-earth humor makes him a master to study.<\/p>\n<h3>5. William Klein<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/26\/10-lessons-william-klein-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">William Klein<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is one of the most badass street photographers in history. He said what was on his mind, and said it the way he wanted. He was a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153director on the streets\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u201d he would often interact with his subjects, engage them, and this puts his soul in his photos.<\/p>\n<p>Klein also was innovative with fashion photography, film, and inspired many other photographers, including the highly influential Japanese street photographer\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/5-lessons-daido-moriyama-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Daido Moriyama<\/a>. In turn, Daido Moriyama inspired other master photographers such as\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2012\/08\/27\/10-things-anders-petersen-can-teach-you-about-street-photography\/\">Anders Petersen<\/a>, and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/26\/11-lessons-jacob-aue-sobol-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Jacob Aue Sobol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Klein innovated using blur in his photos, high-contrast and grain, and\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/30\/how-to-shoot-layers-in-street-photography\/\">multi-layered photos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Diane Arbus<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/15\/11-lessons-diane-arbus-can-teach-you-about-street-photography\/\">Diane Arbus<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is famous for photographing people on the fringes of society. Many of her portraits are a bit unsettling to look at, yet they show deep humanity and empathy. If you love shooting portraits, definitely check out Diane Arbus.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Lee Friedlander<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/03\/29\/10-lessons-lee-friedlander-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Lee Friedlander<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is a funny photographer with a great wry sense of humor. He innovated in\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/18\/street-photography-composition-lesson-10-urban-landscapes\/\">urban landscapes<\/a>, creating complex scenes (without overlapping figures). Not only that, but his\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/11\/street-photography-composition-lesson-9-self-portraits\/\">self-portraits<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0have great humor and are quite introspective.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Chapter 3: Contemporary photographers<\/h2>\n<p>This section of photographers are personal friends of mine \u00e2\u20ac\u201d photographers who I have gained a lot of inspiration from:<\/p>\n<h3>8. Josh White<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2015\/08\/21\/7-lessons-josh-white-has-taught-me-about-street-photography-and-life\/\">Josh White<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is\u00c2\u00a0one of my best friends, and shoots with his soul. His body of work includes personal photos, as well as street photos. He is the one who inspired me to shoot more personal photos of my loved ones, and family.<\/p>\n<h3>9. Blake Andrews<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/20\/10-lessons-blake-andrews-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Blake Andrews<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is a prolific blogger and passionate photographer. He has a no-nonsense approach to photography, and his knowledge on the history of photography (as well as his daily practice of photography) is a massive inspiration to me.<\/p>\n<h3>10. Jacob Aue Sobol<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/erickimphotography.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/26\/11-lessons-jacob-aue-sobol-has-taught-me-about-street-photography\/\">Jacob Aue Sobol<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0is probably one of the hardest working photographers around. He has taken \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpersonal photography\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to the next level\u00e2\u20ac\u201c by getting both physically and emotionally close to his subjects.
