As a modern photographer, you must learn how to cross-pollinate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is cross-pollination?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You are a visual bumblebee. You collect nectar, and sources of visual inspiration from various fields and flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is your duty as a visual artist\/photographer to make your own unique VISUAL HONEY.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t limit your sources of visual inspiration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You will find the sources of visual inspiration in the most random, strange places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been studying a lot of BAUHAUS art, abstract art, and have been on a binge of Piet Mondrian, Leonardo da Vinci<\/a>, and architect Zaha Hadid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get stuck in the ghetto of the photography world. Expand your horizons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assignment 1: Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look at any photographs for a week<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If anything, to be a more creative photographer, make it an assignment for yourself to NOT<\/em> look at any photographs for a week. Only look at visual art outside of photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study sculpture, drawing, painting, drawings, architecture, fashion, or design. Study anything. But don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look at any photographs for a week.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then after a week, start to see what kind of visual and dynamic compositions<\/a> you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve discovered in the visual art you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been studying, and see how you can apply these outside concepts to your photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t call yourself a photographer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Call yourself a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153visual artist\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/strong>. This means that the visual art you create can be from any<\/em> visual medium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means you can make visual art and pictures with your camera, with your pen, with your phone, with your iPad, with your ink, with your paints, and it can be digital or analogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reason why this will help you as a photographer: you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t always need to be making photographs.<\/strong> When you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not making photographs, you can be drawing, painting, making sculpture, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can be prolific as a visual artist, regardless of the weather, the city you live in. You expand your visual horizons, and elevate your artistic potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, you might want to remain a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photographer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d to have photography be your primary form of visual communication and self-expression. But, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t let the definition or genre or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photography\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photographer\u00e2\u20ac\u009d limit you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assignment 2: Change your biography to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153visual artist\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On your website, Instagram, or artistic statement or biography \u00e2\u20ac\u201d take out the word \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photography\u00e2\u20ac\u009d or \u00e2\u20ac\u0153photographer.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Just call yourself a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153visual artist<\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d keep it short, simple, and to the point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, for the next month or so, explore and experiment with other forms of digital art \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and see whether this helps motivate you even more in your photography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
