The Hacker Ethos

The hacker ethos: the ethos of “hacking” together the resources you already have//the opportunity to innovate a new approach (which might be superior to an easier approach of just buying anything new).

For example, instead of buying a new phone, hacking your old phone. Or getting a used phone from friend, family, or used forum — and refreshing it and making it new. Installing a new rom (operating system) on an old Android device, fixing an older iPhone (new screen, buttons, battery). Take an older phone, reinstall it from scratch (blank slate). No superfluous apps or programs. Uninstall as much crap as possible.

In praise of fixing/refurbished/DIY (do it yourself)

Fixing/repairing old stuff, or even remixing it.

If you must buy a new something, buy it used or refurbished (significant discounts abound).

Economics

Thinking of saving money as a game, not some sort of self-denial thing.

Economic as getting more “bang for the buck”.

The skill and joy of fixing something old and making it cool (like refurbishing an old school car) instead of buying a new something. A refurbished 1969 Porsche or Mustang as cooler than buying a new BMW or sports car.
