What does the “Christ“ in Jesus Christ mean?

According to Thomas Jefferson, the Jefferson Bible, he refers to Jesus as Jesus of Nazareth, not “Jesus Christ”.

It is funny, because I was baptized Catholic, and grew up Catholic my whole life, often jumping in between some random protestant churches, and also some Lutheran churches. During this whole journey, I never questioned this, what does “Christ” actually mean?

I did some research, and according to wiktionary.org, it comes from the ancient Greek, Christos (khristos) which means “the anointed one”.

Khrio— in ancient times, to anoint somebody with olive oil. As a sign of somebody being “chosen”.
