Thoughts on iPhone 13 Pro

Just played with the new iPhone 13 Pro the other day, the small normal size, and I quite liked it. Feels very good it’s all in the hands without a case, and I quite like the huge looking lenses for the camera.

In terms of the image quality of the cameras, they actually do use looks significantly better than the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 12.

Cinematic mode is actually quite impressive, although when you’re using it there seems to be a strange halo that occurs around the heads of the subject. However, I think this is actually a very interesting way to capture every day life events, in a more cinematic video mode.

Should I get it?

I don’t think so. If you really need a new iPhone, I’d recommend getting the iPhone mini. iPhone mini has superior ergonomics, as it is smaller and you can hold it better with one hand, or with your less dominant hand.

If your passion is photography, better to just shoot with a Ricoh GR 3.

Who is the iPhone pro actually for?

Ironically enough, the iPhone pro is not for professionals. Rather, it is actually for very very normal people. For example to the average person, the iPhone pro cameras will blow them away. For the average person, they no longer need a DSLR.

But for us more enthusiastic photographers, the iPhone isn’t good enough, nor do I think you’ll ever be as good as a standalone digital camera.

Moral of the story:

Don’t get the iPhone Pro.

If you really want to practice your cinema mode, just use a Ricoh GR 3 in 24fps. Or if you want to do hard-core cinema, just get a Lumix or Panasonic camera.

What is the iPhone Pro really good for? Not sure. but it seems that having an iPhone is still superior than having android phone or Samsung phone. iPhone is good for FaceTime, using Siri, voice dictation, iMessage, and that seems to be about it.
