Photography Project Ideas

FIRST SENT ON ERIC KIM NEWSLETTER

Dear friends,

The more I think about it, the more I love photography and am an advocate for it.

Some thoughts:

First of all, photography as one of the ultimate forms of artistic self-expression. It is both social (you typically gotta leave your home to go out and make photos) and also artistic (you exercise your skills to frame and compose your photos).

So here are some project ideas for you:

  1. Changing colors project: It is fall, which means (in some places) there are changing leaves and colors. I say photograph up-close macro photos of fallen leaves and textures– experiment with post-processing, high contrast monochrome or even color. I am a huge fan of the cross process film preset on RICOH GR III.
  2. Loved ones project: This means strive to make as beautiful and artistic photos as possible of your loved ones (your kids, parents, your self, your partner, etc). I typically tend to prefer monochrome for more artsy photos of family members.
  3. Try shooting film! FILM NOTES is a good starting primer. Read my free film articles here for more inspiration. The great thing about COVID and film; we finally got enough free time at home to finally learn to shoot and process our own film!
  4. Start shooting video. Experiment with 4K, 60FPS, 24FPS, and upload it to YouTube. Video is augmented photography.
  5. Just do random walks, and keep it raw and unedited. I even encourage you to walk around in random places, and shoot videos and photos of anything you find even remotely interesting.
  6. Start your own blog. WordPress.com is probably the easiest way to go. Start blogging your photos, thoughts, and life journey. The best blog post is the most imperfect and honest one.
