Big Homes Are Overrated

Going from a 300 square foot “luxury” minimalist studio apartment to a 1,700 square foot 2 bedroom, 2 bath, enclosed garage, three floors— I will easily say:

The smaller more high quality (well designed space in a “luxury” apartment complex) space is superior.

Why? Some reasons:

  1. It is more difficult to make a big space feel comfortable and cozy. You must buy more furniture, decorations and other random things.
  2. Upside of a lot of these new minimalist “luxury” apartments and small tiny studios is they are already pre-heated. Good for colder climates, especially on the East Coast.
  3. I think we American people (or almost all people) have been suckered into thinking “bigger is better”. I don’t believe this is the case. More space means more stuff to maintain, manage, clean up, more floor space you gotta vacuum and keep tidy. And I always seem to forget or misplace my essential items downstairs in the kitchen, whereas my bedroom is on the third floor.

Lesson: if you have the option, opt for the smaller more “luxurious” space. Smaller space, but superior quality, superior newness, superior appliances, and superior design aesthetics. Don’t let the numbers of square footage fool you.

Also, when touring homes and apartments you plan on living in, just follow your gut. If you don’t feel the vibes of a place, pass on it, no matter how good the specs are, no matter how good value it is on rent, no matter whatever other additional perks are included.
