Thucydides, an Athenian, wrote the history of the war between the Peloponnesians and the Athenians, beginning at the moment that it broke out, and believing that it would be a great war, and more worthy of relation than any that had proceeded it.
Thucydides, the beginning of the History of the Peloponnesian War
Now is your chance.
COVID-19 and beyond
For myself, I always fantasized about living through some war, shooting photos on the front line, or doing some Magnum-styled shit. Henri Cartier Bresson, David Chim Seymour, Robert Capa style. Now with COVID— we are truly living through history and through some bizarre times. Why not document it, and create history?
Why document and create history?
In fine, I have written my work, not as an essay which is to win the applause of the moment, but as a possession for all time.
Thucydides
To create something that will become a possession for mankind of all-time … what greater or more epic goal is there?
To see, to know
History literally means to see, to know. To witness then to judge events. To be a historian means to inquire for yourself. Once you inquire things for yourself, THEN you can judge for yourself.
Why judge? Because as photographer philosophers, to judge things is the source of our philosophical inquiries and curiosities. When we feel we can get better knowledge, understanding or wisdom of things, we feel stronger. More confident. More brave. Fuller, stronger, harder.
Which means:
Go out and shoot it for yourself. You’re the judge!
