Why Were the Renaissance Artists so Good?

How did the renaissance artists accomplish so much more, and create so much more insanely epic art works than anything of modern day times … hundreds of years ago? With no computers, technology, internet, etc?

Hidden faces in the sky of Raphael:

Raphael — definitely the sign of a playful spirit!

My theories:

  1. No distractions from the internet, tv, technologies, movies, video games— anything modern electronic.
  2. Fewer distractions means more focus to focus on attempting great art works
  3. No real differentiation between different types of artists. No need for specialization — the artist was a “full stack” solution and did everything himself.
  4. Belief in the greatness of the individual artist. No need for “committees”, “collectives”, or groups. The individual over the company.
  5. Nonreligious: My theory is that these artists were effectively atheists. They took commissions from the church and state people, but the artists themselves didn’t believe in God. This meant, they were able to paint religious themes more playfully, less seriously. Think of the paintings of the bored angels and Cupids (Raphael).
  6. Deification and fascination with human body. Not to see the human body as evil, morbid. See the human body as the apex of all beauty.
  7. Deep study of human anatomy and biology.
