Buy a Lumix/Panasonic for Video and VLogging

If you wanna do video, I highly highly highly recommend (practically all) Panasonic/Lumix cameras.

Why Lumix/Panasonic?

First of all, Lumix is the fancy brand name for Panasonic (kind of how Lexus is the fancy brand name for Toyota, Infiniti for Nissan, Porsche for Volkswagen [even Audi and Lamborghini are fancy Volkswagen cars], and even how a lot of Leica cameras are essentially Lumix cameras in disguise.

Everything works perfectly

When I shoot the Lumix G9, Rode Video Microphone, Leica/Lumix 12mm f/1.4 lens in ‘intelligent auto, iA’ mode, everything just works! I can shoot either 4k 60fps, or 1080p 60fps, and everything just works.

Serious thought went into this.

I have deep respect for the Panasonic Lumix team. I am convinced– these guys are real photographers and videographers. I think they actually use the cameras in the real world. Thus, everything makes sense and works well.

Even the Lumix G9, simple things:

  1. The on/off switch on your forefinger next to the shutter button– it makes sense!
  2. The hand grip of the Lumix G9 fits perfectly in my hand. It feels so good!
  3. The shape and design of the camera as very lovely. Looks like a mini Lamborghini.

Anything which empowers you to create more is good!

What is the purpose of a camera? To shoot photos and videos. The Lumix does this perfectly.

The simplest.

This is why I don’t like Sony cameras:

They are complex for nerdy reasons.

Sony engineers are nerds. They want the best specifications, the best technical stuff, but the menus are a nightmare. Lumix/Panasonic is great– the menus are simple, direct, and make sense.

A note to camera company manufacturers:

Spend less time fixing the specs of a camera, MORE TIME on the UI/UX of the menu systems.

I love the ‘dynamic black and white’ filter

RAW is for suckers. JPEG and filters are 100000x simpler and better.

Lumix G9 as great for BOTH still photos AND for video.

I love the look of the simulated grain and the grit. Very beautiful.

Intelligent auto is great for skin tones.

I have not found a camera yet which has as accurate skin tones than the Lumix camera. Shooting in intelligent auto is great in JPEG or shooting MP4 video. You don’t gotta post-process nothing!

Lumix/Leica lenses

When in Japan, I tried all the cameras. The Lumix and Panasonic cameras are the only ones I liked.

Also, I really liked the Lumix Leica 12mm f/1.4 lens. The build quality is phenomenal (just as good as any standard Leica lens I’ve used), and it has autofocus!

Micro 4/3rds?

Micro 4/3rds … I still think this will be the future for still photos and video.

Why? It seems the future is this:

A hybrid of BOTH still photos AND video.

And to be honest:

It seems in the future (and now), video is more important than still photos.

Why I really like Micro 4/3rds for video:

  1. Smaller form factor. The new Panasonic/Lumix S1 cameras are very cool, but far too big and heavy. They might be good for uber-high-production film stuff, but not good for daily use.
  2. Smaller 1.4 lens: If you have a full-frame 24mm f/1.4 lens, the thing would be fucking massive. The Leica/Lumix 12mm f/1.4 is a full-frame equivalent of 24mm. Thus, I can have the wideness of 24mm with the ability to shoot at f/1.4 [good for video] with a smaller, lighter, and more compact size. This means I can shoot longer (even at night), with less fatigue and pain in my shoulder, arm, or wrist!

HYBRID IS THE FUTURE?

I believe HYBRID is the future. To shoot BOTH video AND still photos to thrive.

YOU ARE THE FUTURE

You create the future!
