Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about Equipment
I am thinking about buying a new camera, what camera or lens combination do you recommend?
For compact cameras, I highly recommend the Ricoh GRD IV. It fits in your pocket, has no shutter lag, and a beautiful 28mm f/2.8 lens.
For digital cameras, I think the best bang-for-the-buck camera is the Olympus OM-D with the 20mm Panasonic Lumix f/1.7 lens (40mm full-frame equivalent). If you want to shoot wider, the best-built lens for Micro 4/3rds is the Olympus 12mm f/2 lens (24mm full-frame equivalent) and you can zone-focus very easily with it.
If you have a Leica and are looking for a lens, I recommend the Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron ASPH lens or if you want a wider lens the Leica 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit ASPH lens. I don’t recommend fast lenses (the f/1.4 Summilux lenses) as they are generally much heavier and I encourage zone focusing when shooting in the streets.
If you are looking for the best bang-for-the-buck film camera, I recommend the Leica M6 with the Voightlander 35mm f/2.5 lens. I recommend getting all your film stuff from Bellamy Hunt (Japan Camera Hunter) by email at email@example.com.
If you have any other questions about equipment, post it to the Streettogs Equipment Group on Facebook and you will get great feedback from the community.
What kind of film do you shoot with and recommend?
I also recommend you checking out the more affordable Arista 400 film for black and white (which I heard is re-branded Tri-X).
What kind of film scanner do you recommend?
I recommend the Epson V700 (that does 35mm, medium-format films, and large-format films). If you only plan on doing 35mm film, I recommend the Plustek OpticFilm 7600I SE Film Scanner (which has the best 35mm scanning quality).
What kind of camera strap do you recommend?
I recommend the Custom SLR Glidestrap + C-Loop for street photography as I like how it takes pressure off my neck and helps keep both hands free! Also note that they are my sponsor, so I am a bit biased! ;)
What kind of flash do you use and what flash/trigger do you recommend?
What camera/lens do you currently shoot with?
I currently shoot with a film Leica MP and a Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron ASPH lens. For my pocket camera I also use a Ricoh GR1V film camera. I have shot with a Leica M9 and a Canon 5D in the past, but have sold both and shoot exclusively film for my personal street photography work.
What bag do you recommend for street photography?
I recommend the ThinkTank Retrospective 5 for your everyday bag for street photography. If you want to carry around an iPad or an 11” Macbook Air, I recommend the ThinkTank Retrospective 7 (what I am currently using).
Where do you get your film processed?
For my color film, I get them developed at Costco in the states (not all the Costco’s in America or abroad offer this service). For my black and white film, I either process it myself or get it developed in Asia (they do it for much cheaper). I usually get low-resolution black and white film scans done by the labs, and I scan full-resolution black and white scans myself with the Plustek 76000I SE Film Scanner.
Questions about Workshops
When do you plan on coming to my city to teach a street photography workshop?
Do you offer 1:1′s in-person or online?
I offer personalized 1:1 sessions in-person depending which city I am in. I could assist you to overcome your fear of shooting street photography, help you find your own personal style in street photography, and critique and give you direction for your portfolio. If you would like to book a session, contact my manager Neil Ta at firstname.lastname@example.org
At the moment I don’t offer 1:1 sessions online, but may open up these opportunities in the future.
I am a student and cannot afford your workshop. Are there any student-discounts or scholarships available?
Yes I offer student discounts and scholarships for my workshops. If you want more information, send my manager Neil a message using the form below.
Questions about Street Photography
I’m a newbie to street photography and need some direction in terms of getting started. What do you recommend?
Make sure to check out my “Start Here” page which I compiled everything you will need to start off in street photography!
I would to get feedback/critique on my images, what do you think of my work?
To get feedback/critique on your images, post your image to the Streettogs Critique Group on Facebook. The rules are that for every 1 photograph you post, you have to give at least a 3-4 sentence critique to 3 others images in group (that posted before you).
I have a question about street photography in general, could you help me out?
If you have any questions about street photography, make sure to ask it on the Streettogs General Discussion Group on Facebook!
Questions about Guest Blog Posts/Features
Do you accept guest posts and do you take submissions for photographer profiles?
We will consider guest posts provided the content is written specifically for street photographers. Because street photography is a small niche with many terms, gear, and photography masters unknown to many other photography genres, we cannot accept generalized content from third party freelance writers or agencies looking to promote websites, businesses, etc. on behalf of paid clients. If an article is submitted, we cannot guarantee it will be published.
My question isn’t mentioned above, how can I ask it to you?
If you want to contact me regarding a workshop, sponsorship, or any other business matters, please contact my manager Neil Ta at email@example.com
