Distinguish Yourself

Do you desire to be more alike others– or to distinguish yourself more from others– to separate the gulf between you and others more?

We are not alike

I had a recent realization:

I despise it when I feel like I’m part of the herd — I have always prided myself in being different from others.

For example, When I was a kid and all my schoolmates were wearing NIKE’s, I wore Adidas.

When everyone bought an iPhone, I got an Android.

When everyone listened to mainstream hip-hop, I listened to underground.

Why be different?

Why do I pride myself in being different?

Perhaps it is because I feel superior to others, or perhaps it is because it is difficult for myself to find people that I consider my peers (my equals//’inter-pares’).

So one aspect:

I like being different because I don’t really see anyone similar to me.

And at the same time– I like being a contrarian and going ‘against the grain’. Why? I am more curious about the unbeaten path — options that others have NOT yet explored yet. Perhaps I have more fun being a trailblazer, instead of simply doing what everyone else is doing.

And also perhaps I am deeply skeptical. I want to discover a deeper level of truth for myself. And this is what I have generally discovered:

What is popular is usually inferior.

Bespoke yourself

Tailor the world to yourself; don’t tailor yourself to the world.

Not every shoe fits the same foot. Then why are you trying to wear the shoes that everyone else is wearing?

Figure out your shoe size, figure out your personal preferences, and figure yourself out– then figure out how you can tailor the world to best fit you.
