How to Conquer Jetlag

Just landed in Hanoi (after a long flight from LAX -> Taipei, to Hanoi), and surprisingly, I’m feeling pretty good! It seems a combination of intermittent fasting, lots of strong black coffee, and a brief nap on the plane did the trick!

Some thoughts based on my personal experience:

  1. Last meal before a flight, eat a ton of meat, and bitter greens (ketogenic). Preferably have all you can eat Korean BBQ, or shabu shabu.
  2. Don’t eat any food on the plane.
  3. Allow yourself unlimited black coffee (no cream or sugar) or tea on the plane.
  4. If you can, take a nap by having an eye mask and some ear plugs. If you can’t sleep just watch a film, read a book, or play games until you fall asleep.
  5. When you arrive, fast all day until dinner time (target destination). During the day drink tons of water, black coffee or tea, and walk around a lot, shoot a lot of photos, and expose yourself to maximum sunlight.
  6. Instead of taking a nap during the day just drink more black coffee.
  7. For dinner time (target destination) eat tons of meat and bitter greens (ketogenic).

It seems this has done an effective job of mitigating and conquering much of my jetlag.

This advice might not work for you but it might!

Some theories

  1. Our body circadian rhythm (wake and sleep cycle) is regulated by food consumption (what time of the day we eat our meal), and sunlight exposure.
  2. Avoid sugar (because although it gives us a temporary energy boost, the resulting insulin/sugar crash actually makes us far more tired).
  3. Also if possible at the target destination, do some physical activity! Go to the park and do pushups, chinups or bodyweight squats (or one legged pistols for the strong!)
