Deep Photography

What makes a great photo? By how profound it is — or deep.

What is deep photography?

Deep: profound.

When you look at a picture, and it says something deep and profound about society, about human emotions, or soul.

For example, this French fry suit. I’ve not made many photos that was able to do the following:

Make the human soul naked.

You can see all of his anxieties, fears, and emptiness — all through that metaphorical French fry. Look at his hand gesture, his forlorn eye expression, and how he’s holding that last fry.

What is this a metaphor for?

Cherry on top

To me, a great photo has a small “Easter egg”, or “cherry on top” somewhere in the background.

This picture (I didn’t notice it until afterwards): the bull in the background (bull as a metaphor for a “bull market”— a profitable market). How does this connect with the image, with the two suits in conversation (man on the left looking miserable, the one on the right licking his thumbs?

Deep symbolism

Picture:

  1. American flag
  2. Suit with red tie
  3. Stock exchange

What’s the symbolism here?

Photos that ask more questions than provide answers

Escapism.

What is this old Japanese suit man escaping from? Why not just play this game on his phone?

Human relationships

What does this picture portray about the relationship of these two humans? What does their facial expressions convey? And how is this juxtaposed with the background (black and white actors having fun?)

Another example (hand gestures):

Visual Metaphor

The tie as a metaphor for a noose (suicide).
