Singapore

A quick life recap:

Cindy just presented in Singapore for a conference at National University of Singapore titled “READING AND MISREADING“, on the history of the French-Vietnamese. More information at her presentation here.

Anyways, it gave me a fun time to do a workshop in Singapore, while also testing out a bunch of cameras (Leica M10, Leica M-D, Leica CL).

Overall, I found Singapore a fantastic place to shoot street photography– so much colors and vibrancy, especially in places like Little India and Arab street.

Life in the suburbs

urban landscape

The reason why Cindy and I came back to the LA suburbs (where Cindy’s family lives) is to shoot Cindy’s sister’s wedding. It was super fun — I shot the entire wedding like a street photographer! Which gave me a random idea– I think it would be great for you as a street photographer to get into wedding photography. A good chance for you to practice your street photography composition, have fun, and flex your visual muscles!

Anyways, I’ve been philosophizing a lot while in the suburbs– questions like, “Can you live a happy life in the suburbs?” and also trying to find inspiration to shoot street photography (when in the suburbs).

Essentially I believe yes, you can find inspiration to shoot street photography (or any type of photos) in the suburbs. We just need to be a little more clever with how we shoot, and what we decide to shoot!

For example, the importance of finding ‘beauty in the mundane‘ — to find beauty in the small things of everyday. And not limiting yourself to just photography — also experimenting with video, making music, or poetry— whatever excites you as an artist!

2. New Workshops: Montreal and Downtown LA

New locations added to my workshops schedule: Montreal (November 10-11, 2018) and Downtown LA (December 1-2nd, 2018).

Why Montreal? Well, Cindy and I have never been there, and we are totally interested and enamored about the culture there– the hybrid of the Canadian-French (and we also hear the food is amazing). We will probably also go travel there with our moms! More info about Montreal Workshop >

Why Downtown LA? It is my classic and favorite stomping ground for street photography. Some of my best portfolio photos have come out of Downtown LA, and I will be back in the LA Suburbs in December. You can see how it is like shooting street photography in this preview video at ILCAFE (my favorite coffee shop in Downtown LA). Learn more about my DOWNTOWN LA WORKSHOP >
